I've taken a liking to radio drama podcast.

Anyone have any suggestions for good ones?

I've listened too/listening too...

The Message
- Great but short - like a Stephen King/Outer Limits style short story.
Limetown - OK but short and didn't really get anywhere
We're Alive - Fantastic, 48, Hour Long Chapters on 43 at the minute and it has been brilliant.
We're Alive Lockdown - Spinoff, will start after finishing We're Alive.
The Black Tapes - X-Files meets Serial 1st season was great 2nd is ongoing and not as good so far, it seems to have lost it's way a bit.
Tanis - Loose spinoff of The Black Tapes and It's the same as TBT, it's in the seconds series and has lost it's way a bit.

I've never really got into fiction podcasts, but will gove that "We're alive" a go.

A friend is always raving about one called "The Truth" but I never really got into it.

It's good, it's very 'The Walking Dead' But remember it came out before the TV show!

It's impressively consistent too Thumbs Up

The sound effects got so much better over the series too. I remember hearing the boots running noises in episode 1 and thinking, "Oh no....".

Brilliant podcast and decent storyline.

Bleak Expectations made some drives to Birmingham and Durham pleasant.

Yeah I'm just getting into audio books, so a fiction podcast would also be interesting to me. Does that mean audio books in serial form or something similar?

The ones I have listened to are more like a film without the visuals.

Not much narration and more use of sound effects.

I find the lack of narration makes it harder to get into the story/understand the characters. Its probably why I tend not to get on with them.

The audio books or podcasts?

Pretty much every audio book I've listened to has been merely someone reading the book - very occasionally you might get an effect etc.

I like them because it means I can 'consume' a book while driving, doing other work etc.

What you describe sounds more like a radio play.

The podcasts.

For the ones I've listened to, radio play/drama is probably a good description. Same style as the Archers.

Generally speaking, Audiobooks are paid for, podcasts are free.

"We're Alive" is certainly free yet I would argue that it would be worth paying for.

Are podcasts like old radio 4 afternoon plays or like talking books?

There are both types. Full cast productions are like the old Radio 4 plays.

I group them into 3 catagories:

2 blokes chatting - stuff like front end chatter and hello internet. Basically a couple of people talking about a particular subject, with no scrip or any post production.

Radio dramas - things like we're alive, scripted fiction dramas with sound effects and different actors reading from a script.

Highly produced reporting - things like radiolab, serial, embedded, planet money. Generally a high budget, scripted report on a single subject with a lot of post production. The presenters read from a scrip and travel the world to talk to experts, etc.

If you have never listened to the likes of Radiolab you are missing out.

I had a listen to the first ten minutes of we're alive. Its good like old radio plays. I liked it, I think it could make a good change from the telly.

Started Listening to 'The Leviathan Chronicles'. It's not bad, it reminds be of a 90's SciFi B movie you might stumble upon Saturday afternoon on a relatively obscure Freeview channel.

FFS! Laughing

I'm getting a bit fed up with the creators self indulgent blatherings at the end of each episode too tbh. 30 minute episode followed by 15 minutes of him talking about stuff Rolling Eyes

Just readin up on it, the creators wife has cancer, Last update was 6 weeks ago, saying there will be more episodes but his priorities are elsewhere which is fair enough!
