I'm assuming the front sprocket runs on some form of bearing, sealed or open? I'm getting a whining noise (almost like that old mini gearbox sound), which increases with road speed (but almost disappears with the clutch in). Oil is clean and not low...

Sounds like a lay shaft bearing. Minis have them.

It's a bearing with an oil seal on the sprocket side. Can be killed if the chain has been run too tight. If it concerns you whip cover off, slacken chain so you can get it off the sprocket and check for any roughness or play. If it feels ok then it's likely just gearbox noise, live with it. My 1100 whines like hell in 3rd, if i ever drop the engine i'll investigate but untill then it can continue whining.

Thanks. I only started hearing it after the chain was tightened (not overly so though), so perhaps the previous owner hid it by running the chain loose at purchase.....is it likely terminal, ie a sudden failure?

I'm off to the continent on the 20th so I'm not sure how big a job it is to sort (ie must do before) or whether it's something that can be sorted when I get back. Is it hard to get at the bearing to replace?

If the bearing is dead it requires splitting the cases to change. It's not a small job.

Erk. Is it likely to sudden seize, or more a case of progressively louder/rougher over time (like worn mountain bike bottom brackets etc)?

Hi

How difficult it is to replace depends on the bike. Looked at the Fowlers web site for the parts list for the CBR600F3 (not certain it is the right one for your bike) and looks like Honda sell the bearing and shaft as a one piece unit. While the bearing might be possible to obtain separately I suspect getting the old bearing off the shaft would be just about impossible with the shaft in place (even if the cases would allow it to slide out). Not a cheap part either:-

As to seizing, probably not but no guarantees as no idea just how bad it is.

All the best

Katy

Very helpful, thanks. It doesn't sound awful by any stretch, but it's almost like gear driven cam whine (not as loud though), and it's more annoying than anything right now
