PostPosted: 07:37 - 15 Jun 2016    Post subject: Infinity slower than Guarenteed Speed. Reply with quote

We have just moved into our dream house in a BT area and signed up for Infinity 2. Was told speeds between 65 and 80 with Guarenteed speed of 57Mb.
Since Friday the speed hasn't changed from 46.1 checking at various times of the day etc.

BT chat said to wait a week for it to settle but if it's not fluctuating I can't see it doubling in speed in 3 days.

Looking at, what I assume is the main socket, there are 2 cables coming out of the back of the socket to other parts of the house and a wire coming up the wall which will be the line in.
Could these other lines be causing interference to my speed.
Also the sockets don't have any plates on the front so no test points to bipass the house circuit.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm wondering, for what possible lawful, non-commercial purpose do you need more than 46.1Mb sustained bandwidth? Thinking

I've got BT Infinity, it's by far the worst broadband I've ever had. Randomly loses connections and not particularly fast. The BT name servers are utterly unreliable. WiFi signal strength varies wildly, no amount of router re-boots or channel changes makes any difference. Currently I'me getting it for free - it's not worth even that amount of money.

To get Windows Update faster than ever.

That and Steam are the only ways I've found that can use the all of the bandwidth offered by Infinity option 2 on their own.

Bin the BT router and replace it with one that isn't a PoS.

Have had no problems with my Infinity since getting it sometime in 2010. Razz

I've got a Netgear N600 DGND3700 which is excellent.

Someone else might be able to recommend one that's a bit more recent. Razz

Because of the Guarenteed speed I am not reaching. If I was told minimum was 46 Then I would have no complaints.
You can't be saying you don't mind getting mugged off with a guarentee that isn't being met.

Ste I must admit this is from my laptop and phone wireless. In all areas of the house it's the same. Will raid some boxes tonight to see if I can find an Ethernet cable.

The only way to test it is to use Ethernet. The only valid test of speed is to a BT endpoint on the same network.

The link speed is guaranteed not the speed to every single website or host on the Internet.

Have a read of what's guaranteed. Thumbs Up

Check what your line speed is on here: https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/

Then when you've got an ethernet cable, do this: https://speedtest.btwholesale.com/

Noticed I'm in the VDSL impacted rate

Will look further in to the speed Guarentee, the website says I have to wait 10days before I can complain loudly and expect them to look into it.

My dream house isnt in the KCOM area I have always lived in.
Want depressing figure on Internet live there. Average speed of the 5 guys in maintenance was 8Mb/s with the highest being 12.

If I remember rightly, BT guarantee speed to the router. How are you getting your speed? If you are using a speed test, then they are not accurate. Check the speed that is synced at the router by logging into the router page (192.168.1.254 if I remember right).

If it is lower than the guaranteed speed, then BT have something like 42 days to resolve the issue. If it isn't resolved by then, you are entitled to leave your contract without penalty.

So exactly the same as via wireless

I can probably win, my connection is around 4mb, and i'm stuck in a 12 month contract. Steam is upset with me

If the speeds are not achieving your minimum guaranteed speed, you should be free to leave your contract without penalty. It's unlikely they're going to be able to do anything about increasing the speed - and I'm not sure asking you to wait a couple of days is going to improve that.

If you're achieving 46mb, I reckon you could kick up a fuss and get yourself moved to Infinity 1? which you can get relatively cheap on a deal. 330mb Fibre to your house though, that looks like an alternative from the screenshot?
