Stupid dvla didn't put 115 on the licence so i joined via their website today.

If anything works they're welcome to recycle it. Just leave enough so my ashes can be scattered......say more than an ashtrays worth.

There isn't really a reason not to be an organ donor. I mean....you're hopefully gonna be dead when they take bits.

I do wonder if you where taken to hospital, in a bad way and your chances of surviving are minimal, would they make the same effort to save you if had a donor card.

I thought they still had to ask your family/next of kin what they wanted?

I do also wonder if you're on life support, with very little chance of survival whether they'd be chomping at the bit to dish out your organs.

yes they are, I believe organs that are harvested from living donors are better than organs from deceased people.

One you're brain stem dead, you're technically dead anyway. so they might as well get 'em while there fresh

Not a chance.

No way I want any part of me going to prolonging the life of a Georgie Best tribute act, or some smackhead.

I've been an organ donor for a while now, but last year I decided I'd sign up to be a bone marrow donor too, since that's something you can do without being deaded.

I figured, from the way the website talked about it, that I'd be called in a couple of months or something. Apparently bone marrow is in pretty short supply. No call yet mind!

If anything more effort is taken to keep you alive so as to keep the organs viable.

I think you missunderstand how organs are harvested or at least the terms used. Ideally you want someone who is brain dead but the heart is still beating, if the heart has stopped beating it is a race against time to get the organs out before they die.

A few years back we kept a brain dead young man viable on machines with fresh blood for about 36 hours hours so as to line up as many transplants as possible.

No thank you. I have expressly forbidden my wife from allowing any kind of harvesting from my corpse.
I appreciate that I won't know if she does or not but for reasons that aren't at all religious, it all seems very
wrong and unnatural to me and I want no part of it. Props to those that do, but it's a no thank you from me.

I have also been on the register since I was a teen, but this week I have seen some good from it. A girl that I work with has been waiting for a heart transplant for ages, and has had two near calls. This week she got a call, it went through and she is currently recouperating. Good work fellas.

@grr666 - I know where you're coming from and used to have this perspective for a long time. That coupled with all the hear say about the NHS selling parts of your body to private companies yadda yadda yadda.

However, once I started thinking about it from the other side of the fence.
What if my kidney/liver/lungs/heart assploded then I'd (hopefully) be on the receiving end and with the only option of a transplant I'm pretty sure i'll be wanting the first one that pitches up...

Its hard to speculate however if your liver gave up tomorrow and you had a shot at either another 20-30 years or saying good bye to everyone next week what do you really think you and your family are going to want you to do?

Its a personal choice, I utterly resent the idea of my meat bag being carved up but at the end of the day I'd go for the transplant and therefore its a bit hypocritical to not be a donor myself.

Grim stuff!

When you register can you exclude bits?

For example, I wouldn't mind them taking anything neck down.

I perceive that anything in my head or that makes up my face, including eye brows, tongue and eyes, makes me; me. I'd hate to die a death of doom and then my wife see my eyes in some checkout woman's head...

So they could literally cut off my head and burn it, and staple somebody else to the body, that'd be fine.
