Fuckitybollocks.

Chain failed on fazer around 70mph.

After waiting 2 1/2 hours for recovery (thanks Green Flag) now at home and covers off.

Chain somewhere at roadside, so dunno what happened there. Front sprocket chewed to pieces, bits of teeth stuck in the lumps of grime in there.

Cracked case, but not bothered about that so much.

Clutch pushrod smashed to pieces, (of which I've found a couple)

So how bad is it? Clutch out and look for any leftover bits? Or try and source new pushrod and hope for the best? (Ideas of suppliers?)

Also, how to release sprocket nut? I've only done it with chain on before and it just spins under pressure now. Wedge the sprocket remains? Pipe wrench? Open to ideas!

Searched on here, but no bugger puts the bike in the title, and I can't be arsed to look through them all.

TL:DR: chain took out clutch pushrod... what next?!

You can use an old chain the jam up the sprocket to stop it spinning. I'm not sure if would damage a new chain though, so maybe find an old one.

Or stick it in gear and use an impact gun...

OK, so removed oil seal on pushrod, stuck a magnet in and got the rest of the rod out. The hole it slots into is a little elongated on one side, but that looks a major (engine out?) ball-ache so will probably remain.

Front sprocket nut still solid. Unfortunately old chain is in the road somewhere, so can't refit to try removing. Don't want to mess up new chain... so plus gassed for a bit and inb4 get some heat on it. No windy gun unfortunately Sad

Thought I'd get on with rear sprocket while I was there. Sprocket nuts loosened while wheel on, but can't for the life of me get the axle out. It turns, and everything is off it (chain adjusters, calliper etc) just can't get the bugger to slide out. Chocked the wheel up and tapped with hammer, but nothing moving... so I guess the axle is either bent or stuck on a bearing or something... ffs,

Pouring with rain now, so left it... but mighty fed up...

Have you tried the Fazer Owners Club - Unofficial forum site? I'm on there but only a newbie to biking and Fazer ownership so can't provide any advice, only condolences. There seems to be quite a bit of talent on there though.

the sprockets are held on with around 80nm and probably loctite, a rattle gun is your best bet for sure!

push rod is no dramas theyre cheap to buy anyway.

engine case is a ballache

engine out is easy to do but takes an age due to carbs and airbox being a prick and massive lack of room, its like 5 bolts that hold the engine in place then push it out the right hand side.

there wont be any parts in the clutch side, did you get the ball bearing too?

take clutch cover off
remove all springs will be a colar in the middle, the ball bearing should be in there.

other than that its easy going

Thumbs Up
Axle came out this morning, so wheel off, sprocket off and new bearings ordered (had also ordered a new axle as they're cheap and didn't know if this one was going to come out bent. Dunno if i'll use it yet)

Loaner rattlegun should be with me this afternoon for the front sprocket.https://i972.photobucket.com/albums/ae205/zark_photos/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20160614_081549.jpg

The whole clutch pushrod came out the sprocket side, so i don't intend taking the clutch cover off (yet). I'm hoping that pushing a new one in (with a new oil seal for the sake of it) will sort it? Hoping not to have to do anything with that elongated hole!

The cracked case... meh, also collected the chain from the roadside this morning. Looks like one of the sideplates failed and it fell apart.

Well colour me impressed.

Rattle gun had that sprocket nut off in 5 seconds. That saved a load of ball-ache cutting it off... I'm definitely getting myself one of those!

In other news, rear sprocket off, sprocket bearing out, wheel bearings still to go, while waiting for stuff to arrive.

Getting there...

It's a real eye opener the first time you use an impact gun - I wouldn't be without mine that's for sure. Thumbs Up

That's some impressive sprocket damage you have there. Could the lumps of grime you described have contributed to the failure? Grit and grease make a pretty good (or bad if you prefer) abrasive paste. I remember the first time I took the cover off of my Hornet not long after I bought it. The sheer quantity of gritty crud under there was astonishing. As a general principle I try to get my front sprocket cover off of all of my bikes at least once a year to clean them out.

Very Happy I knew the chain was on its last legs... i'd already got hold of chain and sprockets, ready to change. just had a couple of errands to do first -and then it all went wrong...
I think, chain failed circa 70ish mph, and whipped through the front sprocket causing big chunks of teeth to come off, then smashing the clutch rod and flinging itself into the casing, cracking it. On its way out, it cut a couple of scratches on the rear wheel.
A right PITA but could've been much worse. Slumming it back on the YBR is excruciating in comparison for a 23 mile commute!

Well fuck fuckity fuck if my Bandit hasn't just done the same thing. Chain snapped, cover fucked, pushrod destroyed and some slight (cosmetic I hope) damage to the casing.

Still waiting for recovery.

Sad
I've got a spare pushrod if they're the same!

Just got mine about fit for flying... wasnt happy re-using the old washer behind the front sprocket nut, so have just replaced them for peace of mind.

I was going to leave the sprocket cover damaged, but noticed that when the clutch lever is squeezed, it flexes out slightly. Luckily there's loads of breakers on eBay flogging spares, so hope to get that tomorrow.

Good luck dude...

Got everything I needed and I'm back on the road. Happy days!

I was on the YBR-a-like for a while, too. Fun but sloooooooooow.
