maybe a dumb question but can speed guns catch you from the front?

a part of the south circular is 3 lane but 30mph limit, i was doing around 45-50mph as it is clear for around 1000m with no junctions. noticed a bike copper pointing his speed gun at me so slowed down a bit he looked down at the reading on and looked a bit disappointed, anything to worry about? i guess they need to stop you there and then if anything?

Yes they can, they just need to turn round and get your number after you've gone past.

He may have not got a clean ping though (can be tricky with bikes) - maybe that's what he was disappointed about.

They don't have to stop you - they can send it in the post (registered keeper should hear within a fortnight)

hmmmm I did see him last minute so unsure if he took down my plate after, but i definitely saw him drop the gun down to read the speed. i would have thought if he did catch me at 50ish in a 30 he would have got on his bike and stopped me there and then? guess i wait and see for the postman Rolling Eyes

He doesn't even need a speed gun to 'do you' ... He just needs an opinion that you were speeding.

Police need some sort of evidence, they'll generally get it from the rider opening their mouth or acceping the fine/points after the threat of court.

Always ask for evidence, tell them nothing.

Not at the scene though.

I would (if I could keep my wits about me) politely decline to look at anything that they claim is evidence. You won't help your case by doing so, unless your plan is to blub and throw yourself on Constable McTarget's mercy.

Corroborated opinion is fine. Corrobation can be speedo of the car they're driving. Think standing at the side of the road be a stretchbut everyone knows bikers kill kittens so they might get away with it.

Why not? I got pulled by an unmarked BMW once as he 'thought' I was speeding down a duel carrageway, I didn't admit to anything, asked for evidence he had, and he said his video/tracking system (or what ever they describe it as) was switched off. Politely gave him my details upon request and he let me go as he had nothing.

Another time, I was in a town, accelerated a bit quick from a set of lights, a pedestrian officer who heard my bike and assumed I was speeding, he stood in the road, stuck his hand out to stop me, I stopped of course, took my lid off etc, provided him my licence upon request, he was asking me all sorts of quesstions to get me to admit to something, told him I was doing 20-30 mph then shut up, all this time he was fumbling to get something out of his pocket (I assumed som sort of booking/ticket pad, when he realised I wasn't admitting, he then started provoking me, picking on my appearence, had grade 2 all over at the time, asked if I was in the Army Rolling Eyes where I was studdying, if I was smart. All the time trying to get me into some sort of weird argument. I just starred at him smilling and nodding. He then picked on my bike Laughing Laughing Laughing looking for any irregularities, I asked him what he was looking for and if I was free to go, he found nothing/had nothing and had to let me go.

And it's Constable Target's mercy down here Wink

Fair point.

I'll clarify my meaning: if they try to show you evidence, you have nothing to gain by viewing it and corroborating its existence.

So, OK, ask if they have evidence, but if they say that they do, don't look at it.

Great job on keeping your mouth shut on the 2nd stop. It's very hard to do, my record is only 1 out of 3 even though I know better. Thumbs Up

Legally corroboration can be from the opinion of another officer.

All the best

Wrong!!!!!

There is an offence of speed reckless which does not require corroboration. A conviction can be secured on the evidence of opinion of someone deemed to be an expert such as a traffic cop, and is one of only 2 offences where evidence of opinion is allowed, the other is being drunk.

The offence of speed reckless is very rarely used these days as most traffic cops are not aware of it, but it is still there......

Does telling them that I was listening to some easy listening on the mp3 and then adding 'Motorhead....' count?

or how about 'It doesn't matter that I can't see whats directly behind me in my mirrors becase nothing manages to keep up anyway.'

While were on the topic, what is the best answer to the question "Do you know how fast you were going?"

What happens if you say no? Laughing

Can't find any info on this 'Speed Reckless' offence. Please educate us!

Choose your fate:

Arrow [Confident] "Precisely 2 miles per hour under the speed limit at all times."
Arrow [Cocky] "Why, don't you? I'll be off then."
Arrow [Freemental] - "I do not consent to this! I was travelling, my license was driving! I am not a ship!"
Arrow [Gangster] Silently soil yourself in the back of the panda car.
Arrow [Technically correct] "I was doing a lot of speeds. At which point precisely? Ha! Trick question, science, bitch."

Honestly is very unlikely to be the best policy, unless you're going to blub and say you need your license to deliver hot kittens to starving orphans.

Oh, the irony. I've been alledgedly nicked by a scamera van but I know full well that when I went past it (and thus presented my number plate) I'd been doing 50 (the speed limit) for at least 200 yards beforehand.

Plus there's a turn off virtually opposite where the van parks, so even with calibrated timestamps theres no way to prove that one of the bikes pictured is the other.....
