My missus got a warning for a leaking front shock absorber in her car, (Fiat 500).

I figured this is something I could do.

My Question is, should I replace BOTH front shocks or just the leaking one.

might also be worth looking at the state of the springs while you have the shocks off,

and also you will need spring compressors, and don't buy cheap ones, they can let go with some serious force otherwise, if you do use cheap hooked ones then please use a ratchet strap as well just to be sure

Cheers, I do have cheap ones, the cars /only/ a Fiat 500 so I don't imagine they are particularly strong but I'll use a ratchett strap too.

Nah it will just be the shocks. Our rears were banging because the top bush rubbers had more or less gone so I
replaced them. Rears are a DIY monkey job so I did those. Cost me about 50 quid total inc shipping to do the rears. I bought these.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-REAR-SHOCK-ABSORBERS-Pair-FIAT-500-FORD-KA-2009-MONROE-G1083-/181877732281?hash=item2a58c1f3b9:g:pj4AAOSwKIpV~5nr

And after renewing the rears I noticed the N/S/F of the car had developed a leak as well, so I ordered a pair of matching Monroe front
shocks from the same place. This time got my local garage to do them for which they charged me 3 hours labour.

Don't seem to have the fronts in stock but they speak good enough (slightly blunt) english for you to be able to
sort out an order and combine shipping (front shocks were bought as separate items) and I managed it okay.

The difference in the car is staggering actually, the old OE shocks are oil struts and these are gas. It's stiffened things
up a bit which has had a small impact on comfort, but it's a hoot in the bends now.

I found some Bilstein ones from GSF that for the pair come to £133 delivered.

3 hours labour seems steep, I've watched videos online and I reckon I could do it in that at the side of the road. With a Ramp as someone who knows what they are doing I can't see it taking more than an hour.

Am I being overly optimistic?

As I understand the job,

Jack up
Remove wheel
Undo top bolt
Undo 2 bottom bolts
Pull out shock and spring
Compress spring
Undo Top Mount
remove spring, bump stop, mount etc.
Then reassemble

all that x2 to me should take about an hour for a good mechanic no?

Hers needed a ball joint doing as well. Probably because she drove it round with a knackered front shock for a while.
Besides, I needed it back on the road same day and I had enough on my plate at the time. I don't begrudge the money.

I text her letting her know about how much it would cost, I jokingly said about getting the sports ones, because they are yellow (her favourite colour) she now wants them Laughing
