As a quick reference, remove the plug and turn the engine over using a spanner on the end of the crank. Watch the valves, when they are both moving at the same time - exhaust closing and inlet opening - the piston should be just going over top dead centre. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

If you spray easy-start or equivalent into the inlet does it run when you crank it?
If so it's fuel related and not spark.
Have you consulted the workshop manuals for the carb diagrams in the sticky in here?

Timing marks can be level with the head, but there should also be a timing mark on the crank case that you *also* need to take into consideration.
You might have had it right initially when you say it was 180 deg out. Hard to be sure as I can't find any servicing info with pictures.
