Bought original TV from Argos way back in November 2013. The speakers suddenly started to crackle after around 9 months usage so I took it back, and got a replacement, incidentally a better model of the TV (only a peasant Bush brand) and even a partial refund!

Now this replacement tele is starting to niggle after 22 months. This issue, right now, is just an annoyance. Sometimes it just won't turn on from standby. This means, wait for it, having to get up. From the couch! dig behind the tv stand thingymajig and unplug it, wait, plug it back in.

I know the issue isn't exactly huge but I worry if this could be the sign of a component failing/failed.

SOGA is no longer around is it? There's a new version, I think. Would it be reasonable for me to take it back to Argos and say, fix it or replace it after 22 months? I'd say it would be fine, I still have the receipt in my trusty file of important receipts. The TV was just shy of £400, I'd hoped it would last at least 5 years.

Advice would be appreciated.

How long was the warranty? TVs often come with 3 or 5 year ones, but if it's the standard 12 months then you're probably out of luck, although I have had out of warranty replacements with some companies (after contacting them directly rather than the retailer).

Pass. I've got the booklet in the file at home so I'll see if I can find out.

So in reality, after dropping £400, one could be expected to go and buy a new one after a year? Would the item then, be fit for purpose?

I'd have thought the Sale of Goods Act is still applicable because it was the legislation at the time of purchase.

It's either this part of the SoGA
https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1979/54/section/14
or this part of the Consumer Rights Act
https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2015/15/section/9/enacted

It's perfectly reasonable for you to take it back to Argos and say, fix it or replace it after 22 months. Thumbs Up

Our TV just just started playing up...
Sounds like its shorting at the on/off switch and is just outside the 3 year warranty.
I'm sure this kind of thing is supposed to be illegal now Rolling Eyes

I bought a TV from Tescos many years ago that died after about 15months. 12 month warranty. Tescos replaced it, no quibbling.

However since then I've paid for branded TV's. LG & Samsung and both are still going well after 4 years for the LG and 6 for the Samsung.

I wouldn't buy a Bush or a Baird or any of these generic cheapys from a supermarket again.

The sale of goods act says that good should be free from defect for a 'reasonable amount of time'

For electronic goods this has traditionally been considered to be six years. Take it back to Argos and complain. Show them the receipt and they should accommodate you. If they don't immediately politely ask if you can speak to a manager.

When I worked selling TV's (in Sainsburys), the managers would always replace items like this.

I don't expect the consumer rights act to have changed the substance of the SOGA really.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't think they sell the model I have anymore. So I suppose they'd offer to repair it, although they didn't last time. They said, we don't make it, so check the catalogue, that's why we got the "upgraded" smart version when the speakers broke.

If they offer to repair I'll happily accept. If they exchange, I think I'll be seeing if I can pay the extra to get a more reputable brand.

Depends if it's a reputable brand or not, my Sony Bravia's 8 years old and still going strong, I actually want it to break so I can justify upgrading Smile

I sort of understand regarding brands etc. And perhaps if it was £100 I would be less vocal about its untimely demise but it was still £400 at purchase. I wouldn't consider that disposable cash.

If I now bought a Sony TV for £450 should I only expect that to last 33 months?

I like LG, I bought one it went strong for 5 years till I wanted an upgrade, got almost half my money back flogging it on eBay, bought another one and that has been going 4 ish years too, no problems whatever. Bought another one for my office a few months back it's only been 3 months but it is still in great shape.

Slight hijack, but ive got a Samsung telly, Tivo is connected to input 2 as input 1 is freeview an is not connected.

If I Watch tv, turn it off, turn on again an it defaults to input 1

So basically every time I turn the tv on i need to switch sources...its getting on my tits

Nice TV though

I've been up since 4am stop making me do maths Razz I think my TV came with a 5 year warranty, which was a promo on the usual 3 year. I doubt they'd offer that if they didn't have faith in their products.

Apply the same to motorbikes, one of those WK650's still a lot of money, but less than the competition.

That's definitely a first world problem Smile Maybe Bob Geldof will do an appeal?

I'm gonna ask more questions seeing as you've been up so long.

It wouldn't be a similar comparison, Shirley? Motorbikes suffer wear and tear. A TV doesn't require servicing, doesn't get shown any adverse weather conditions etc.

I don't know any answers, just asking.

As Meghan Trainor would famously (not) say:

It's all about the quality of the components, the quality of the components, the quality of the components, no treble.
