Hi all.

So the time has finally come and after much waiting im picking my bike up tomorrow.

In time i hope to get some new gear and change to all leather but for now what i have will do me. Heavy textile is not nice in summer haha.

I would like to repalce my helmet as its a few years old now, i have been looking online but im not sure what size to go for as i feel id take a small/medium some manufacturers are different size wise i believe? problem is there arent really any motorcycle shops around me to try on and i dont want to order the wrong size online or anything as its important.

whats the best options for me? also are these £30-50 helmets online on ebay and amazon any good?

for example
https://www.amazon.co.uk/LS2-SOLID-GLOSS-MOTORCYCLE-HELMET/dp/B00G7JML8W/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1466630209&sr=8-9&keywords=motorcycle+helmet

or

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Leopard-LEO-818-Scooter-Motorcycle-Motorbike/dp/B00BFDK5UQ/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1466630209&sr=8-13&keywords=motorcycle+helmet

Obviously id love a Shoei but budget does not allow Smile

Thanks Smile

Open all the vents and when you're on the bike it should be a non issue. Walking around, naturally, is a different ball game and is times like that when a topbox that you can just lump your jacket in while you walk around will come in handy. Going into town on warm days I see more bikes with jackets and helmets cable tied to the seats than I would normally.

Can't say I'd fancy walking around in leather for long, sweat like a biatch. I've done it in textiles and survived, although was warm also.

You're thinking of buying a helmet blind? Nope, do not want. No excuses in my view on this one, get yourself down to the nearest shop and try some on.

You'll have to travel bit further to find somewhere where you can try them for 'fit'.
We don't all have the same shaped head, so different makes (and sometimes models) fit different people differently.
When you've worked out which manufacturers helmets fit well and their sizes then you can consider buying them 'on-line' but without trying them on first you stand a fair chance of having to buy a dozen plus before you get one that fit correctly.

Having said all that, it's your head so if you don't think your brains are worth the trouble then do what you want...

helmets are one of the things that I try not to skimp on..

here's why.

say your doing 30 through town minding your own business, but the car in the other lane gets over taken by someone who didn't see you..

the only thing between your skull and a combined impact speed of 60+ against metal is your helmet..

would you trust that to a £29.99 jobbie off ebay with free delivery?

Bargains can be had, but please do some research and know roughly what your looking at

same applies to the rest of the gear, and that's where going to a shop even just to get your sizing right pays off.. you can then hit ebay and get good 2nd hand kit for new budget gear prices

Have a look the Sharp ratings: https://sharp.direct.gov.uk

If you want a decent budget helmet, check out the Box BX1. Under 50 quid and a 4* rating.

And they sell them in halfords so you can try one on in there Wink

A legit ECE R 22-05 £29.99 lid from a reputable source that fitted correctly? Without hesitation.

And there's no need for eflay or spamazon either.

Laughing
Any part of you that comes to a dead stop from a 60+ mph impact will be deaded no matter how expensive the gear you bought was.

Expensive does not equal safer gear 100% of the time. Expensive gear often equals more comfortable, stylish, lighter etc. Sharp ratings matter for helmets, and how they fit your head.
You can buy very expensive gear (Belstaff waxed cotton jacket - I'm looking at you) with crap protection and vice versa.

Me? My lid is a Schuberth S2 which was rather expensive. I had the cash, liked the look, and feel of it. I know full well that it may be no safer than a sub £100 helmet.
I would argue that good quality gear will last you longer and make riding more pleasurable, and that is why you should buy it. It is often more expensive.

most expensive helmet ive ever had was a shark s800 (I think)

it was 190 quid at the time

it was the only one that I had to get rid of as it started to fall apart

I'm quite happy with the 50 quid ones now that last ages

always change lid after an off anyway so as long as I don't die it will be replaced anyway

I just bought a YELLOW (for added visability) Tuzo Horizon flip front from M&P (Busters), cost £35 delivered. Reasonable considering it's a nice lid to wear, passed all the safety checks and is as quiet as my Nolan N90.

I bought a Viper lid for about £50 that was OK.

Only minus point was that the visor had quite a gap at the top and there was no adjustment on it, rain used to just pour in to if!

Absolutely, from a decent seller.

+1 and what Reg Tidy said.

OP; as has been mentioned check ratings etc; theres no reason a cheap lid can't be decent. I've used a Viper RS44 which cost ~£40 including a spare visor for about 3 years. Probably the best helmet i've owned so far and i've spent over £150 on a couple.

The main thing is to make sure it fits. Quite a few places online will do returns/exchanges if it doesn't though.

How can you be certain? have you crashed & banged your head with all your helmets?

I understand your comment, i have also had a Viper RS44 until recently, but you don't know how effective they are until you go splat Wink

hm yeah im gonna visit a few shops and see if i can get a new helmet, only thing is i have no top box on the bike yet as i cant afford to buy one and to travel up to a shop on the bike how will i transport my new helmet home while wearing my current one?

if this makes any sense... lol

also will a better helmet reduce wind noise or is it the angle of the helmet ?

That comment was meant more in terms of comfort/wind noise; should of been clearer.

I see your point in terms of safety - although I don't see any reason to think its worse than many £400 lid's. Thats good enough for me personally Razz.

As mentioned, you don't have to actually buy from the shop, just use it to make sure it's a really good fit, However you could find (or buy one there) a bag to strap to the bike (like most people would) or even a back pack (not to be recommended as you will 'probably' break your back in the event of an accident if you have something like that on your back).

The helmet noise depends on a few things such as the external shape, fit and internal padding (and more) so it won't be less just because a helmet is new.
It may actually be quieter but it may not be.
I gather 'flip front/modular' helmets are noisier than full face (My Caberg Duke certainly isn't quiet.... the only issue I have with it).
You can ask for recommendations for a quiet helmet but that same make of helmet may not fit you as well as the person giving the rec, so it'll still be noisy for you.
Always a good idea to invest in some ear-plugs for high speed journeys. Cool
