I know there are a couple of anglers on here so it's worth a shot.

I've recently inherited a lot of fishing tackle.
About 50% was mine that I'd given away, but have now got back.
I'm no stranger to angling and still do the odd bit now and then.

Amongst the pile of stuff there were a dozen fixed spool reels, some in good condition and some in not so good condition. I gave six to a friend and kept the rest.
The anti reverse on 3 of these reels was not working, I've fixed two!
On one, (Diawa), the switch was snapped, so I made a replacement.
On another, (Abu Cardinal), there was a tiny spring that had bent, which I fixed.

Now i'm a bit stuck on the final one.
It's a "Shakespeare 'Medallist' 4435" fixed spool.
I've had it apart and I can see nothing amiss.
When I take the reel apart and operate the anti reverse switch, a lug moves and meshes with the main drive, but I can still turn the handle in the reverse direction, however cranking the handle becomes harder, similar to a clutch drag system.

Is this a feature of this reel, i.e. there is no anti reverse as such, just a drag system to slow down the rotation?

Unfortunately I can't find anything on the net about this reel, so If someone's got one could they enlighten me, please.

Not a lot of help I know, but fishing kit goes out of date faster than bike models Crying or Very sad
You try getting spares for a Mitchell 410 Shocked or a perfectly good ABU 501 Mad

I had a Shimano that had something similar to that sort of reverse drag thing, but that was a larger fixed spool reel I used for carp fishing.
however it did also have normal spool drag on it as well.

I would imagine if the anti reverse switch is all intact and working, then there's a problem with the one way bearing, it's either got too much grease on it and not activating or its broken/rusted up.

I'll get a photo, if I can, it's not rusty and it's not over greased, i'll have another look at it.

Well matey you just might be in luck, one of the reels I got is in fact an Abu 501, let me know if you want it, it's working as well as they ever did!
I bought one, new, ages ago, never really liked it to be honest, always used to tangle the line up, which was a shame as that was one of its main selling points.
My reel of choice, was always the Mitchell 300A, had a couple, lasted for years, not sure what happened to them actually, still got a spare spool for it but no reels.
My other favourite was my 'Abu Cardinal 55 express', still got it, it must be over 30 years old now and still works a treat.

I got a newer Abu Cardinal amongst this lot and I have to say the original Abu stuff, made in Sweden, is light years better than the made in China stuff, can't see this one lasting 30 years!

I can see where your coming from, those will last years but they are old and compared to a modern reel, not as smooth or technologically advanced.
Modern drags are far superior, bearings are better quality and in places like the line roller eliminating line twist. Handles have bearings, balanced rotors etc, it all depends on what you pay, a cheap reel is a cheap reel, today or 30 years ago.

4 years ago I bought a new coarse set up, in Cyprus, rod and reels, it's all "TiCA" stuff. It was relatively cheap but it's very good stuff, the reels in particular are all metal, which is a step up from the newer Abu stuff which are mainly plastic!
The rod is excellent as well, it's a multi tip, match rod affair, which can convert to a feeder rod etc.
I've been using it for carp and it is really good!

Never heard of TiCA beforehand, not that I keep up with current stuff, as far asI can tell it's all made in Taiwan and marketed mainly in the USA.

if you get a picture of it I may be able to help as I have a couple of old Shakespeare reels that I don't use so they may share parts

If you do strip it Sid, remove the bearing, clean it and check the needle pins/rollers for wear and the cage aswell which is usually plastic, lightly grease it and reassemble.

Photo 1:- This is with the "anti reverse switch" in the off position.

Photo 2:- With the "anti reverse" on.

As far as I can see all that happens when the switch is in the "on" position, a lug is pushed into place which engages with the, castellated, inner spool thing!
Since taking the photos I removed some excess grease and reassembled it, now when the anti reverse is on, all that happens is it is now difficult to turn the handle in the normal retrieve direction and still no "anti reverse".

The castellated inner spool thing should house the one way anti reverse bearing, is this the part you have disassembled and cleaned?
It looks different to more modern reels, well mine anyway, disassemble it and post a picture.

Looks like you may have cleaned the gears instead of the one way bearing, lightly grease the gears and put a drop of oil on the bearings that are visible then strip the one way bearing inside the castellated part that sits under the rotor , clean and lightly grease the needle pins, make a note of everthing in order as i can't find a reel schematic for this reel.
