PostPosted: 12:46 - 21 Feb 2005    Post subject: What type of licence do I have? Reply with quote

Hi,

I'm trying to get some insurance at the moment but I'm getting a bit confused with the terminology being used. Sorry for being thick but can someone tell me what type of licence I have.

I passed my car test in the uK in Nov 1999 and have 6 years NCB.
I took my CBT in Feb 05 and have my certificate.

Here is the full range of licence options I seem to have with most insurers.

A1 Light motorcycle test
Category A motorcycle test
EEC licence (EU)
Foreign
Full UK
International Licence
Provisional UK
Restricted Full (3 years or more)
Restricted Full (less than 3 years)

Can anyone help me here, I'm getting pretty high quotes and I need to make sure it's not because I'm telling them the wrong things. Embarassed

Cheers
Rs

Your license afaik is a provisional one. You may be able to select "Provisional w/cbt"??

You have a provisional motorcycle licence. Most websites I have visited give you the option to state that you have a car licence, own a car later on in the application process.

I would assume that you have held your provisional as long as you have your CBT. You may want to phone an insurance company to confirm this detail so as not to give the wrong information.

you will have held your provisional licence since you first applied for your car licence I suspect.

Not sure when the provisional bit came into play, but I'm pretty sure it was more than 6 years ago.

it'll say on the back of your licence, assuming you have the photocard type.

You get provisional entitlement automatically when you pass your full car test.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

What the others said, you have a provisional licence which allows you to ride a 50cc with L plates from the moment you pass your full car licence.

The CBT is the first part of you full bike licence but I THINK it doesnt give you any additional rights on your licence, or contribute in any way to a reduction on your insurance quote, it just allows you to take the full test.
if I remember it is only valid for two years. If you have not taken your full bike test by Feb 06 you will have to do the CBT again.

Im not 100% certain on this, its some time since I did mine but Im sure someone will correct me if Im wrong.

No you are perfectly correct, although two years from Feb 05 will be Feb 07 Mr. Green
