I formatted a 250gb hard disc out of my old laptop. Full format not the quick format. Afterwards I noticed it said 222gb free but 172mb used. How come drive says its a 250gb drive but does not have 250gb free?

Cheers

If you are too stupid to use google, then the reasons for that 172mb partition are beyond your comprehension.

It's a partition table. It like a directory of what data is in the blocks and so on.

Current research suggests that it's actually better if children learn to self sooth at their own pace.

You have 250gb hard disc. You have formatted it.

Than you notice there are only 222gb left.

My educated guess is 28gb has decided to leave your hard drive.

It happens all too often nowadays...

Don't listen to these lot, they are winding you up.

What you have done here is what the tech industry refers to as a "faux format". Something didn't quite go right the first time.

What you need to do is keep formatting it, you will notice the GB's coming back after at least 4/5 formats. Usually around the 8th format, you will start seeing it return to normal.

Hope this helps Thumbs Up

That's what happens when you do things quickly. Try doing a slow format instead.

OP, open the disk management (there, you will see what the problem is).

Win 7: START / right-click COMPUTER / MANAGE / STORAGE / DISK MANAGEMENT.

You will see all the physical drivers in your computer and you may format the drives there, you may allocate more space to the drives (your problem?), etc.

Since it's an old unit some of the missing space may be bad sectors - areas of the disk that can't be reliably written/read. Continual re-formatting might 'recover' these, but you're risking corrupt data. Leave it be.

Don't let these guys fool you, it's just the type of formatting you have done.

Change it to fat32, reformat and you should have all of your space free.

If this doesn't work, you might need to go back to NTFS and try again.

Remember that 1GB is not really 1000MB though, those HDD guys do love to cheat.

Oh and the partition table stuff.

What was the problem again?

Formatting related but I dont think worth a new thread:

Is it a good idea to regularly format SD cards used in action cameras? Also is there a best way to do this other than just pick Format then Quick Format with the default format settings that come up in windows IE FAT 32 and 32 Kilobyte allocation size?
