Young people, help me find a phone.

So even my apprentice at work has let me down. I'm after a new phone and can't find one that suits.

Unlike the pocket TV he carries around I'd like a phone that's phone sized so a 4" screen will be fine. It has to be android, be 4G and have a reasonably new chipset for modern apps.

Oh finally not stupid money, hundreds and hundreds of pounds for a telephone is just daft for the amount I use them.

So that's not to much to ask is it? Well yes, I can't see to be able to find a phone that meets just a few requirements. Don't mind the make, even if it's one of the unheard of Chinese things as long as it's reliable and I don't have to toss around getting it to work over here.

Any ideas?

Nexus 5? Bit long in the tooth, but still very serviceable and can be had for decently cheap. Think 16gb is 169 at the moment. Stock android is hard to go back from once you're used to it.

My dad has a Cubot H1 and is very happy with it. A mate bought a Cubot H2 and its even better.

£115 3 day battery (phone itself is larger as a consequence), GPS, 4G LTE. Phone seems fast at normal Android stuff (I'm sure gaming would be an issue).
Not as crystal clear as a £500 phone, but you can only really tell with the screen 2 inches from your face.

I will definitely be buying one (or its equivalent) once my S5 dies.

Bludy young people, clearly have no idea what a phone sized phone is.

My 2 phones are both less than 115x 60.

So far the oneplus is 152x75
moto g 142 x 72
moto e 130x 67
cubot 154 x 76
s4 124 x 61. I'd seen the s4 and it nearly won except it's over 3 years old so in phone terms getting a bit long in the tooth.

In one respect I'm sort of glad I didn't get half a dozen recommendations that suited as I'd have had to be disappointed in my google skills not to spot them.

However even though I don't think I'm asking much none of them fit the bill. I just want a phone that fits easily in my pocket.

My mum needed a new phone several months ago, similar brief and settled on an LG Leon.

It's a decent little phone for under £100 brand new, got a decent sized screen and it does the job

2nd Generation Moto E is about the smallest, decent, cheap phone you will get. Got one for my 11 year old and it's fine unless you want to run games or RAM heavy apps. SIM free for £70-80.

Any of the Sony Z1,2,3,4 or 5 Compact will do you. Features and price vary by model, but they're all IP65 water & dust proof and have top notch cameras.

Dimentions are around abouts 127 x 64.9 x 8.6 mm (Taken from the 3, but they're all similarly sized).

I doubt you'll regret a bigger phone, I was against it at first, but after I got one I never looked back.

there's not much about in the smaller screen range of smartphones these days, i'd probably recommend the sony xperia z5 compact out of the options.

My partner had issues finding a phone as she didn't want a big screen, even the latest revision of the moto g is too big.

Oneplus one/2/3 will be too big, I presently have a oneplus one which is good for me as I specifically want a large screen for entertainment purposes.

Yeah I'm really not keen on big screens and you're right there's not many small ones around but fashion will change and small ones will be the in thing again one day.

So from the recommendations for the spec I'm after we have the ...

lg leon
samsung a3 2016 (which may not have been mentioned but found in my travels looking at the others).

I've compared them on gsmarena (a good site) and the samsung has more writing and numbers than the others therefore is best.

The only issue is the price. I believe it waas £260 but I've seen them for around £200. If it comes down again soon I'm going for that one, if not I think the Leon is 2nd best.

So it looks like I've decided. After a slow start you came good in the end BCF, rock on.

Odd logic here

If you are prepared to pay over £200 for a phone then get a Moto G4 for £160. Better display and battery, more RAM and a bloat free version of Android with the Motorola.

If you want small screen, capable and cheap then get the Moto E 2nd gen. It's a better phone than the Leon and a bargain at £79.

I've ordered a doogee x5 for £35, only using it for satnav purposes but it's a 5" screen and well...£35.

and yes, i expect it to burst into flames at some point.
