I haven't tried altering the air screw yet, only the throttle-stop screw - I plan to do that tomorrow but I thought I'd check here first to make sure I'm not missing anything obvious.

The moped (Suzuki FZ50) is fine when it's running, but it has a habit of cutting out when I come to a stop; the revs drop and the engine sputters out. It starts up again if I hold the throttle halfway open and give it about 4 or 5 kicks, which is odd because from cold it will start with just one gentle kick every time.

Try with your hand, does the kick go down easily or does it kick back a bit?

Try cleaning air filter. It all indicates that its running rich, if it starts well cold but warm doesnt.

Providing you have fuel flow it sounds like the pilot jet has a restriction, try the choke when you think it`s going to stall.

The spark plug is new. I checked it and it's sooty black - classic "too rich" looking spark plug. The air-screw was almost closed; the manual says 1 3/4 open (almost two full turns) so I've set it to that.

When I set the air screw though, I first did it with the air-filter removed and the revs went far too high. I don't know if that's normal but with the filter off the moped was ready to pull itself off it's centre-stand. With the filter back in place and the air-screw at 1 3/4, I've guesstimated the idle speed and now I just need to take it for a run to see what happens.

An old problem has cropped up again; the throttle cable is sticky; I don't know if the carb cable is okay (it's a splitter cable - throttle controls both) but the throttle cable is definitely sticky. If I have to buy a new one (and the one on there IS a new one) I'll have to figure out what the right cable to use is because it's not a normal standard FZ50 cable; the throttle is off of a different bike and I know not what model.

But for now, I just need to give it a ride and see if it works or not.

Thumbs Up
