If we can afford the foreign aid budget then we DEFINITELY can afford the Successor programme.

Trident is already in use and has been since the 90s.

Correct. The real work gets done down south, courtesy of Babcock and the likes.

Pre 1945-Europe at war every few decades for centuries killing millions.

Post 1945-no European war in the main areas of Europe.....0.2% of gdp for that. Worth it.

Barrow in Furness is in England. it does sound Scottish though and for years I had thought it was well north of the border.

For general info:
Subs = Barrow-in-Furness (England, very north)
Missiles = Lockheed (US)
Warheads = Aldermaston/Burghfield (South England, near the M4)

Isn't it great giving £12bn a year in foreign aid when we have food banks?

There'd be a lot less food banks if people weren't using them unnecessarily.

It's very easy for pretty much anyone to take the piss by taking advantage of food banks offering free Tesco value food.

Interesting views on things just seems like a massive expense in my eyes. Would we ever use the Nuke and if we did surely we are all going to be fecked.... The nukes are useless to the likes of terrorist attacks, so called cyber crime.

Searching the web and i know not everything you find on the web is true.

The main companies involved in Trident are US multinational Lockheed Martin (who produce the missiles), BAE Systems, Babcock & Wilcox and Rolls-Royce – who are involved in the Successor programme – and also names like Bechtel, Honeywell, Raytheon and Serco who are contracted or subcontracted in relation to the current Trident system.

According to the House of Lords register of interests, around 15% of sitting members are directors of, or shareholders in, companies that are either directly contracted to the Trident programme or invest in it.

Prominent names include Lord Hollick, a Labour Peer who is a director of Honeywell. Lord (William) Hague, chair of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). RUSI, who are supposedly impartial US and UK government defence advisors, are sponsored by Babcock, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Rolls-Royce.

But one of the most telling individuals is Labour’s Lord Hutton, defence secretary under Gordon Brown. He is an adviser to Bechtel, consultant for Lockheed Martin and chair of the Nuclear Industries Association (NIA).

[short sighted, materialistic view] because it keeps my old oppos in a job [/short sighted, materialistic view]

agree with you though, not much of a deterrent when anyone using nukes will pretty much fuck the world up one way or another.

If they don't spend it on Trident, they aren't going to magically up the minimum wage again.

We could spend it on coastal patrol vessels to sink boasts coming to UK from the jungle. Thumbs Up

My son in law works at Burghfield. Apparently if something cocks up they end up enclosed and the whole facility implodes, I believe my daughter gets a rather nice payout if he gets deaded at work.

Im no "make babies not bombs" hippy type but the whole deterrent argument is kinda flawed tbh in my opinion at-least.

Who are we deterring? cyber criminals and terrorists etc dont give a shit, hell even Argentina didnt give a shit about our nukes when they invaded lol.

I think only 9?? countries currently have nukes, most of the other 180 odd arnt under constant threat of invasion because they dont have nukes.

Seems to me the only country ever deterred from using nukes... because of other nukes is the united states, who during the 1950's had planned to drop a big bomb on north korea during the korean war, after using them on japan, the only thing that stopped them using them again was the ussr getting them to work and threatening to retaliate on nato countries if the us bombed korea.

I would repect the MP's alot more if one of them just said summin along the lines of "a nuke is a big stick, and we like having a big stick, ours is getting old....were going to build a new stick" instead of this scaremongering bullshit they spew out about everything these days.

As somebody has said they make out its in our best interest to build these things when in reality its to keep there own and there friends businesses ticking over for the next 80 years.

I read that the MOD has said it will cost 31billion to build, but they have a 10 billion pound contingency encase of extra unforeseen costs, it would be a pretty safe bet that after hearing that the company's involved will make damn sure they get all of the 41billion if not more.

We're also supposed to spend 2% of our GDP on 'defence'.
While our GDP may now be a bit lower, if it's not being spent on Trident, it should likely be spent on another aspect of 'defence'.

This aspect seems to have significant amount of the money returned to the UK economy, while others may be less so.
