Mornin'

long story short, my in-laws bought a left hand drive camper in the UK, threw the keys at their manager and sodded off on retirement for a month driving round Spain until they got to their holiday home and have parked up for the foreseeable future with the intent of enjoying their retirement out there for a number of years.

So, the camper is UK registered and UK insured and the plan is simply for it to stay parked up in their garden as guest accomodation as they can't extend the property or have permanent buildings.

So, to avoid my father in law clocking up 'fines' for lack of tax, insurance or MOT what's the easiest and cheapest method of removing it from the DVLA records or just my father in law not being considered responsible for it just in case it causes problems later. There is no intent to ever put the camper back on the road.

My thoughts so far are to ''sell'' it to Mr Cameron, 10 downing st and send it in recorded post, while finding it amusing he didn't seem to think this a good idea.

Persuade a local breakers that for a couple of quid to register it as having been dismantled

register it as sold for export

any other ideas, nice and simple as I don't think he really cares or sees it as possibly being an issue.

ta

sorry for any spelling errors, a few beers and I've lost my glasses so can't even see the keyboard!

Just register it as SORN.
You don't have to do anything more after that.

What he said, would be the obvious solution, as long as it's parked on private land!

Sounds like it's going to be parked in Spain. Razz

They could do this:
https://www.gov.uk/taking-vehicles-out-of-uk

If they're living in Spain and there's no intention for it to go back on the road then keeping the UK insurance running seems unnecessary.

SORN is probably a better idea as when they do want to drive it again, they won't have to mess around reregistering / importing / filling in whatever forms the DVLA want and paying however much it'll be.

Why did they give their manager a set of keys for their camper van?

Keys for the hotel they were the managers of.

So SORN is now SORNed until taxed? doesn't need to be registered as SORN each year?

that'll do then.

It's Sorned until you tell the idiots at Swansea otherwise, or you sell it.
Sorn and forget it!

Perhaps with the amendment to keep the proof of SORN slip?
Nobody in their right mind should trust the DVLA to not fuck up the database down the line.

Changed to perma-SORN some years back. Thumbs Up

Well given its going to be parked up in Spain. It's not exactly going to get dobbed into DVLA is it...... One would also guess that the address has not been updated either Wink

But I would worry that "stay parked up in their garden as guest accomodation as they can't extend the property or have permanent buildings. " Is going to lead to problems with the locals, about breaching regulations or dumping the van (eyesore or such)

Why make it any more difficult than it needs to be-there's a section on the registration document which states the vehicle has been permanently exported, sign it and send it back to DVLA-why are people over complicating matters?

Or register it in any country should you ever want to sell it?
My guess is massive.

There is no intent to ever put the camper back on the road.
That's what he said in his original post so we have to assume that's what he meant!

Yeah, but to be fair he did say "loosing" in the title and I'm pretty sure he didn't mean that Wink

I'm not sure if the address the DVLA has is my home address or my father in law's last known address (his ex employers)

There's no issue with the camper sitting on the property as it's technically still a vehicle, it's tucked away at the end of the driveway pretty much out of sight from outside the property- just not allowed to build a permanent structure (wooden shed would be ok) due to the regulations there.

it's actually on one of the Balearic Islands off the coast of Spain so the ferry cost is a few hundred £ back to the mainland, it'd only be worth it if anyone wanted to do the road trip through Spain and then ferry from Santander or road trip through France which my in-laws have no intent on doing due to the cost of ferry back to the mainland.

I wasn't aware that SORN had become permanent and thought it was a yearly thing that would be forgotten to be done at some point so yes, I did mean to loose the responsibility, either by getting it registered as scrapped or exported or similar.
It won't see the road again.
