Shoulder pain, without prior injury and/or exertion. I just woke up on monday in the morning, and there it was and it is quite painful. The odd thing is, I can freely move my arm and the shoulder hurts only when the arm is in a certain position. Can one pull a muscle in sleep? I tried to do a push up, and I can feel no limitation there, but it's been 2 days and the pain still remains. Eh?

Wank less or just don't put you arm in that certain position.

I'm 26 and it hurts even when I walk. Confused
I do have some grey hair though, but that runs in the family, my hair will turn all grey by 30. At least I'm not going bald. Dance!

Rotator cuff injuries are common.

Classic symptoms are pain at a certain point when lifting your arm up in front of you but not when rotating it to the same position the other way (round behind you and over the top). I used to get them a lot due to the type of movements I do in my work. Could get so bad I couldn't lift a pint up.

Takes time to sort. Prevention is better than cure, the type of core and mobility exercises you get with yoga/ Tai chi/ pilates etc all help prevent this happening.

That's when it all started going downhill for me Sad

Have you been doing any repetitive actions? Driving sometimes does my shoulder in. As recman says mysterious pains are one of the joys of getting old.

For example I was limping for a week, thought I had a shin splint or something, then a days rest and it went. Also my indicator really started hurting for a while, that went.

If it continues go to your doctor, although if healthcare's anything like the NHS where you're, they'll just give you some wanky exercises that are freely available on the Internet.

Where abouts in the shoulder is the pain?

I see, so I'm going to give it a few more days and if it's still the same, then I'm going to see my GP.

The pain feels like muscle fatigue (lactic acid), I mean the same kind of pain. It's located from the side of the shoulder, where the bone is, maybe slightly below that area.

Rotator cuff most likely - exactly the same happened to me two years ago and it's still giving me pain and reduced movement.

Same here, until I did these exercises (at the bottom): https://www.lnwh.nhs.uk/services/ealing-community-services/musculoskeletal-specialist-service-and-physiotherapy-service/musculoskeletal-exercises-for-patients/ As Stinky says it takes time, I did those exercises for ages but they worked, and I've been given so many wanky physio exercises* which don't I was surprised how much they helped.

*NHS didn't even refer me to physio (I found those exercises myself), they prescribed some ibuprofen gel, which helps with the pain but obviously nothing else.

A powerball helped for me too in the latter stages of recovery.

Weirdly, pain in the right shoulder can be a sign of gall bladder problems. Oh, and "the bad AIDS" (Copyright BCF Wink ). And https://www.webmd.com/pain-management/tc/referred-shoulder-pain-topic-overview

I'm sure it's nothing. "Can one pull a muscle in sleep?" Yes, I've done it. Woke up, went to get out of bed and had severe neck pain, or lower back pain on another occasion. Back pain is the worst. Only then do you fully realise that everything you do involves back movement, and it is slow to heal.

You're about 4 years early. From 30 onwards you'll get weird things going wrong with you on a weekly basis. I'm 38 and the list of minor niggles that have cleared up in a few days for this year alone is longer than the equivalent list for my first 20 years.

where is the pain?

I have loose joints in my shoulders, so if I lift arms above my head you can feel both shoulders fall out of their joints - quite common im told?

Anyways when it happens i get a really dull ache - kinda like a bruise in the middle of shoulder thats lasts for days an can run into shooting pains to my finger tips

You will prob find you have lifted something funny an twanged a muscle or something

It's called 'Frozen Shoulder'. The general consensus is the cause is unknown but it goes away by itself on average over two years. I was lucky with mine, it's mostly gone after eight months. I suspect e-cig fluid caused it (glycol definitely was an issue, VG a suspect).

When one goes you have a ridiculously high chance that the other will immediately flare up.

I had a cortisone shot to fix mine. The first I suffered with for over a year before having the shot and it was gone within 48hrs. The second then flared up and I went straight back for a shot and it went within a week.

My poor dad suffered through one, then the other, then back to the first. Despite being told you can only have them once per arm.

I think it's getting better, but it's still sore. Can't feel it when I walk, which is a good sign, as walking is quite essential part of my life. I'm gonna give it time till Sunday and will see. If it's just a muscle problem, it should resolve itself.

Thank you for the input lads. Thumbs Up

Yeah, my right shoulder has started showing symptoms recently. Women talk about the pain of child-birth...fuck off, I've nearly passed out after catching my elbow on something. It's like having a bullet shot straight into the joint (I imagine).

Having said that, forcing movement into the joint does free it up and it's a recommended tactic (if you can deal with the agony).

A friend of mine had a shoulder pain and his wife (a nurse) insisted he went to a doctor. He was in hospital for weeks as he'd had a heart attack and needed a bypass. The surgeon said he was lucky, the blocked artery in question usually ended up being fatal.

Yours is probably nothing to worry about, but always worth getting checked out.

Shoulders are ridiculously complex things, lots of ways of hurting them.

The doc may be able to help, but my personal preference is to see a physio or personal trainer who knows a lot about shoulders. I'm a dislocator, I found a trainer who is also a dislocator and knows a hell of a lot about shoulders. After a year seeing her my shoulders don't hurt any more, apart from during sessions - where she has me doing exercises that make it feel like something is on fire deep inside my shoulder after a few reps with very, very light weights.

Oh if we're doing scare stories a guy I worked* with had shoulder pain after playing cricket, went to the doctor and was diagnosed with lung cancer.

* He's dead now.

Hell, I remember the excruciating pain of lightly brushing my arm against a person walking in the opposite direction. I must have looked like a premier league footballer with the kind of over-reaction I was appearing to have.

Could just be muscle pull? I had a spate of them over a couple of years, pillow changes seem to have sorted it out and not sleeping on my front so often. Getting older and less flexible doesnt help.

I had a fall about two weeks ago and my shoulder took a big hit. Shoulder ached for a few days then cleared up. A few days later it flared up again. Turns out it was the fan in the bedroom during the night to cool the room down during our little heat wave. Shoulder is still a bit achy but loads better than a week ago.

So, lucky me, I guess. I gave it more days, kept it easy and the pain is gone. It still feels like there's something not quite right there, but I think it's going to be just fine.

By the way, interesting reading. Once again, thank you for your input. Thumbs Up
