BT + PIA + qBittorrent = throttling?

I used Private internet access with qbitt on virgin cable no problems.

Just moved and am with bt broadband. I start up a torrent and speeds are excellent. Then after a minute or two it gradually slows to nothing.

Have tried various ip's. Some seem to work better, but it happens to them all in the end.
Also tried limiting number of connections in qbitt, but seems to have no effect.

Any ideas. I'm no luddite, but am not very techy. So any idiot proof advice appreciated. Thumbs Up

Should also have said it affects my web connection overall. Websites timeout trying to connect.

The odd thing is Plusnet who are part of BT more or less don't throttle or block anything so far as I'm aware.

BT started packet shaping and throttling torrent traffic some years back.
Unsurprisingly the problem was solved when I started paying another ISP.

I find that limiting my total number of peers helps with this on my home network. With default settings, any torrent slows my browsing experience to a crawl. Now I normally set a global of around 100 peers, with a per-torrent limit of around 20 peers. It seems to improve things for me, and means internet access on my other computers isn't affected. Though, you have already said that you've tried limiting the number of connections.

I don't know an awful lot about torrenting, so I am not the best person for advice. I did find (many years ago) that enabling encryption on torrents actually increased my download speeds significantly. I think that was when I was back on BT. I don't know about your torrent client, but it may be off by default.

I use transmission on my RPi and Mac, and its default settings always work pretty well for me. Could be worth trying just to rule out any settings within qbitt making things slow.

You have tried speedtest.net?

Does it work any better if you don't use private internet access?

Okay. speedtest says:

My connection (wifi) 29 download, 9 upload.

With PIA 32 download, 8 upload.

Experimented with 259 mb file to torrent.

Started with VPN connected. Download speed peaks at 1.7mb by the 1 minute mark. From 1.5 minute mark gradually slows to nil and stalls at about the 2.5 minutes. Downloaded 44% of the 259mb file. Now web pages won't load either.

Restarted torrent without VPN: quickly gets up to speed of 1.5mb. Downloads the rest of the file in about a minute and 20 secs
at an average speed of 2mb.


So is the PIA VPN at fault then?

Like I say it all worked fine at my last house with virgin. First time trying to use it here it all goes funny.

Sounds like you need to cut the upload limit.
To much upload = jack shit coming down...... (each bit coming down, needs to send a message back saying thanks Smile )

So limit upload's to less that 50% of your upload speed Thumbs Up

I've limited upload speed to lowest possible, 5 bps, still dies.

I'm just going to leave it all standard. That way it downloads fast for a minute or two, disconnect and reconnect VPN and start again. It's a pain, but I only d/l a few TV shows a week.
