Hi all,

I've been reading posts on the forum for a while now and thought it was about time that I introduced myself.

I'm a Software Developer living and working in Swansea.

I'm fairly new to bikes; did my CBT in Feb and commuted on a YBR 125 for a few months with the occasional joy ride at the weekends.

I passed my Full A license in June (perfect theory, 1 minor MOD 1, 3 minors MOD 2) and got myself an ER-5 a couple of weeks ago.

I have to say that I love biking more than I thought I was going to, and that was quite a lot to begin with.

I got zero minors on mod 1 but a lot more minors than you on mod 2. Wink
Biking just gets better as you get more skilled. Every day's a learning experience for me.

No, but then I'd hardly class that as a fair comparison...

Surely that would be a learner legal bike. If anything I got off of Susan Boyle and climbed onto Madonna (as she is now). Sure I didn't go for the best possibility but in comparison to the YBR it's a beast.

I got a commuter, to commute. Who ever thought that would happen...?

Maintenance issues and known faults on EX500-based Kawasakis are widely under-reported. They can be a real money sink. Everyone says it's a solid and reliable, proven engine, but they're wrong. If you'd asked for advice, I would have suggested a solid inline-4 for commuting. Bandits and SV650s are good.

Sv650 isn't IL4, it's a twin.

Oh OK. I was sure it was an inline-4, but I was wrong. That's fine. I only mentioned SV650 because my instructor recommended it to me as a first bike when I passed. I've never owned one. That said, I've had a GPZ, and it had many issues.

I test rode one not so long ago, seemed like a nice bike and is reviewed well on MCN etc, but bit of a sporty riding position for my back. Smile

You're wrong. It also shares soft little bits in common with all the other crap EX500 bikes, and those soft bits go wrong. There are serious design flaws in the way that engine is fueled and cooled, which easily result in a seized engine, and the same design flaws make repair and some maintenance tasks a serious overhauling process.
