PostPosted: 10:32 - 20 Jul 2016    Post subject: Dear Auntie BCF... some $%*@ vandalised my car and... Reply with quote

Two weekends ago I was going to clean my car and list it so that I could use the money toward my motorbike.

SUPER EARLY on the Saturday morning (aka: Friday night drunks) some idjit went along the road and vandalised 5-7 cars - including both of mine. The damage: one car no longer has it's just recently replaced passenger side mirror and a lovely mark on the door where the person kicked, the other has no passenger side mirror and a massive scratch mark stretching from the front headlight over all four passenger side panels AND the fuel tank cover..

The quote for repairs on the one to be sold (the one with the scratch): £2204.

So Auntie BCF: what do I do?! I want my motorbike! But, besides that, I don't wish to make a claim on my insurance when I'm just selling the car straight away - and my premiums will still be pushed up because of it. One suggestion was to sell it as is and reduce the price of the car by the cost of the repairs... that doesn't seem viable to me, because that quote seems awfully huge anyway. Another option is to replace the passenger mirror but leave the scratch.

The really-not-a-good-idea third option is buy a motorbike anyway...

Any advice on how to deal with this would be muchly appreciated.

As a note: YES the police have a suspect. NO I have no idea what's happening with it (I haven't actually managed to speak to the investigating officer). YES my neighbours know who did it (they suggested to show up on their doorstep with the quote and say "fix this"). NO I have never made an insurance claim before.

Edit: It's a 2012 Toyota Yaris; the one with just the broken passenger side mirror I'll be fixing myself and is a Eunos Roadster Mk1

Fix it or don't. Sell it or keep it. Maybe contemplate getting more than one quote for repairs. Or don't. Eh?

That'll be a quote for having the work paid for by your insurance company. Laughing

Replace the mirror yourself and get yourself some quotes for having the scratches fixed by companies like ChipsAway. The total should come in at less than £2k. Laughing

It's ok, don't tell us what car it is. That's not important at all when deciding if its worth repairing it or not.

Either way £2k for a mirror and a mark? Jesus, you're being done..

.. on a totally unrelated note I have some magic beans for you to buy. Want some?

Urk! Whoops.. Knew I was missing some vital information...

It's a 2012 Toyota Yaris - lovely basic commuting car.

The other one, which I'm going to fix myself, is a Eunos Roadster Mk1.

The scratches should be repairable. https://www.chipsaway.co.uk/services/paintwork-scratches/

That's a lot of money. I did someone's bumper in with my bike. £180 later it was repaired so perfectly I couldn't even see a mark where I hit it.

You should be able to find much cheaper than £2k if you look around.

If your neighbours know who it was, why are you not knocking his door and telling him to make full payment for repairs.????

Does he have his own car/bike??

It's 4 panels, not just 1. Plus the fuel cap.

Without putting too fine a point on it: because I'm not threatening enough. Believe me when I say I want to do that. I need me a couple of thugs at my back! Laughing

Yeah, the time to do that was when you were still furious about it. A genuinely 'mental' angry person gets taken seriously.
