Saturday walking home from the pub I stumbled slightly and 'rolled' my ankle. I didn't fall it was just 1 miss step. Anyway It has swollen up loads and still hurts. I can walk on it without too much trouble. I have limited movement in it but because it is sore the swelling has gone down abit but is still there and noticeable. My missus says I should go to the quacks because it might be broken. I reckon cos I can walk on it it is alright and the Docs will just say RICE.

What do you reckon?

I'm a fully qualified internet doctor if there were such a thing. Thumbs Up

Have you been RICE'ing it so far?

Could try adding some Ibuprofen to the RICE and see if that makes any difference.

Sort of, but TBH I'm a bit shit at it, I'm crap at sitting still. Laughing

I went into work today and probably shouldn't have, yesterday was OK because I RICE'd then walked about then RICE'd again.

Seconded. Broken bones don't like it when you put weight on it.

More RICE. I can do you a sicknote if you want? Razz

(Being able to walk on it doesn't mean it's not broken.)

Either RICE or Dried Peas work great for a submerged phone too. Thumbs Up

I wouldn't leave it too much longer.

If something is broken (and something might be, there are a lot of small bones in there and they can get cracked. I wouldn't use degree of pain as in indicator), it wants dealing with sooner rather than later. If a fracture isn't immobilised within 6 days it's classed as a non-union and is way more of a PITA to fix.

My mother in law walked a mile home and around all day the next day with a broken hip

Get it checked

She stumbled off a curb and thought she had bruised it

Ice it for the 1st 24-48 hours to keep the swelling down, then after that keep it warm to promote blood flow to help healing.

I'm a climber and have to be so careful as a damaged finger tendon is pretty much game over for months

Ligaments/tendon damage is a nightmare as unlike muscles, there is a limited blood flow around them so healing time is greatly increased.

I rolled.. well say rolled.. I fell off a dyno route and landed against the wall with my ankle twisted under me from about 1.5-2m up. Massively painful but I could walk on it after an hour or so.

Totally lost all sideways stability. Did exactly as mentioned above with cold then hot and my chiro kept the joint free whilst everything settled down and it's much improved and much stronger now.

There'll be some scar tissue and I'm told it'll never be as strong as it once was (due to said scar tissue - it doesn't have the elasticity like your ligaments/tendons do so its more likely to break under strain) but you can get it near enough back to normal.

Just try to keep it still initially (I used an ankle strap folded over a couple of times and a couple of socks so immobilise it in the right place) so it could heal correctly and yeh.. used heat to keep blood flowing. After a few days try to keep it moving without straining it so it doesn't lock up. Take it in stages.

as for pain meds, volterol or however its spelt works best for me. Rub it onto the hurty and job done. the ibuleve stuff never seems to work for me.

Wrong.

I broke my leg in much the same way in January and was walking about on it for eight days. I thought I had a bad sprain but it turned out to be a fractured fibula. I even stood on one leg to demonstrate to my GP that I could bear weight. It's pretty thin where it joins the ankle and can fracture quite easily.

this plus one I was walking about on mine for 6 months awaiting it to repair its self the tibia takes all the weight I had even ridden a pushbike as we didn't know it was broken to start with as hospital forgot to tell me

Get it checked out.

In February I chucked the bike down the road (undeclared on spill counter Embarassed ).

Picked myself up, walked tenderly up and down the road a bit, picking pieces of bike up. Rode it home, taxi down to A&E.

Fibula broken in five places, op required, metal plate in. Three months off work.

Brool Story Co, etc.

Being able to use it isn't a good indication of health. Thumbs Up

Liar.

Liar? What do you base that claim on? If you search back through my posts you'll find a couple stating that I'd broken my leg. Your fibula bears a small percentage of the load through your leg and if it's a stable fracture, which mine was, won't shift. A fractured tibia is another thing entirely. It was sore but it certainly wasn't agonisingly painful.

Of course a delicate little flower like yourself might find it unbearable but I certainly didn't.

As en ex-skateboarder with now rubber ankles, with extensive experience of extremely bad rolls, ultra-swelling and the likes, I can tell you it'll almost certainly be fine.

Interesting to see stories from people who did the same and discovered they'd actually suffered quite severe breaks. Makes me wonder what sort of injuries I rather idiotically walked off over the years Laughing

Ice and hobbling was my usual remedy.

Here's a couple screenshots of some bad ones. (If you aren't a fan of images of legs looking like they're broken (but not) then it might be NSFW):

Second one was the worst I've ever done by a long way.

Was going to go to the quacks this morning woke up and felt alright, have rested it all day and it's loads better. Still swollen and sore but a fraction of what it was.

TL:DR

It's feeling better, probably fine.
