To OP, no I've not considered a USA bike holiday because:

1, i don't fancy going to the US that much period. The flight is too long and I dislike flying so much it worries me and I can't relax.

2, All the biking abroad I've done or want to do has been on my own bikes. I want to ride to the abroad country I want to visit not fly there.

I have rented 50/100/125cc scooters in Greece and a few knackered old trail bikes too. But I wouldn't fly across the world to sit on a shiny Harley. I can go do that at Stratstone in Birmingham.

I rode a Harley in Florida. Was disappoint. 96 cubic inch (1,573cc) engine. Wouldn't go over 90mph. Not allowed to take it off the Florida Keys.

Rode it for 2 days then swapped it for a Chinese import 125 fitted with 18" apehangers, forward controls and with a flame paint job and slash-cut drag pipe (the guy had it through the back of the rental shop full of standard ones "I got just the thing for you son!").

Was awesome. Did Miami to Key West on it in a Hawaiian shirt, shorts and a head-rag and not a single fuck given.

Had two Harley's in Yankland recently. They're OK - over there! Can't say I'd fancy hustling round uk roads though, but in Florida, 30degrees of heat, shirt, no helmet they weren't too bad. Unsure how a 1800cc bike struggles to crack a ton though.

I bought a ridiculously cheap Harley the other day (2005 Carb model Sportster) which I rode back from Lewes in Sussex. Mixed feelings about it and really only bought it because I knew if I did some work on it I could sell it and make a ridiculous profit.

Terrible suspension
Uncomfortable in general
Wiring loom is a disgrace
Mirrors are crap
Tank isn't really long trip friendly
It cooks in traffic
Low quality touches that just make you annoyed considering what they're charging.

Not really a fan of this one to be honest. I've rebuilt the carb and am now tacking the really shoddy wiring which is all over the place and consists of the cheapest wiring laid out in an exposed manner which has taken its toll. The battery cover fixings are a disgrace and Harley should be ashamed of themselves for using cheap plastic clips which (if you check the forums, break really easily). The agreed fix is cable ties which to me, is just disgusting considering the price of these things.


I'll reserve judgement on their other models but I'm not being won over here. Give me Japanese any day.

With stories like that and a generally poor quality reputation surrounding them, I'm just really surprised that the numerous Japanese Harley Davidson's havnt cleaned up and closed down Milwalkee iron for good.

Robby did explain it to me why the Jap Harley's arnt as good or popular or have much of a following, but I reckon I'd be much happier on a Shadow or Wildstar than the all American bone shaker.
