Hi all,

I recently passed my motorbike test in London after getting a surge of energy to complete it and get my dream childhood bike, a harley Vrod.

After I picked out the model I started phoning around to get some insurance prices. Unfortunately I can't find any quotes that will give me insurance on a Vrod for less than 7k. I understand it's an expensive bike and I'm living in London, but seriously?

I can clearly see that when I put "garaged" down on the form it drops to under 1k. I'm more than happy to try and rent a garage space but it seems that where I'm living in east central london, they are impossible to find.

I'm also shocked to find out that an underground secured gated car park that are abundant around here, do not help with getting insurance down at all.

I feel at a loose end now and have nearly come to accept that I'm just going to have to wait until my situation changes but thought I would post on here to see if I'm missing a trick.

Cheers!

Dane

There aren't any tricks to miss unfortunately. It's an expensive bike in the most expensive part of the country. Only option is to consider another bike.

There's loads of 'tricks'.

From what you tell them your job title is to declaring an Almax chain might make your quote more expensive, there's lots of ways to try and reduce the price.

Using price comparison sites to play around with all the variables will be more fruitful than phoning to get quotes.

It's a bit like taxes... might not like it, but you gotta be makin'it to have to be payin'it!

You can afford a brand new harley.
You can afford to live in central london
Then suck it up, you should be able to afford to pay the insurance...

Or... you cant 'really' afford that life-style........ and perhaps there's a few more important things in the mix you should be looking at to find economies, than whether to skimp on insurance on a brand new, easily crasheable, highly nickeable motorcycle, you probably haven't even paid for.....

And has to be said, few of us can afford our "dream-bike", ever; let alone the ink still wet on our newly won bike-licence!!! Life is sooooo cruel.

Have you tried your council? Even in London there are council garages available to rent try to find one: https://www.gov.uk/rent-council-garage

There may be waiting list, but I have friends that after 6 months waiting got a garage for funny monthly price.

Also you can rent council garage from other London council with slightly more expensive price which is again not braking the bank £100 a month, for example Southwark: https://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200440/garages

Or Tower Hamlets: https://www.towerhamletshomes.org.uk/my_neighbourhood/parking_for_residents/apply_for_garage_or_parking_sp.aspx

Where in central east London are you?

I though that you and your husband could afford it between you.

You are a homosexual like all the other harley riders, aren't you?

Thanks for the welcome mate. Have fun being bitter on an online forum.

"Skimp" on insurance? So It's quite normal for most people to pay insurance which is half the cost of a new bike. Joke.

Most people don't ride a Harley, you're a minority among minorities.

It's also quite normal to buy a bike that is worth a quater of the amount you spent if you buy a Hardley.

There's a blog I've seen somewhere by a former bike thief.
IIRC in murica, where he says how much he loved an "underground secured gated car park". They are a piece of piss to get into and a nice quiet place, out of Joe Publics eye, so he could get on and sort the locks out and get the bike started without causing too much damage, so he'd get more for the bike from his local bike chop shop.

As for buying a completely unsuitable bike for London as your first big bike. Is it really a low risk of theft while it's parked outside the Shoreditch wine bar or a Hoxton burger joint?

Aww, don't be butthurt with Teffers. He might be long winded but he doesn't seem to be at all bitter. He's really helpful if you can work your way through his walls of text.

Have you actually ridden a V-Rod and compared it against, for example, a motorcycle?

Oh do stop being tedious, you lot.
You really do need to accept that all sorts of people can and do ride Harleys.

A Harley is no more unsuitable around London than a Chelsea tractor ( Laughing ) or any less impractical than any number of sportsbikes which would usually be highly tuned to ride on racetracks rather than congested urban roads. Yet plenty of people ride those around town.

I ride my Sportster round and filter through traffic perfectly easily. A V-rod isn't all that much bigger. Its not exactly a fully loaded dresser Rolling Eyes

And as for having to be "rich enough to afford" to live and ride in London, you're just being ridiculous. You just have to be ... mad enough ... Shifty

OP: I got a garage from Newham Council without even having to be on a waiting list. Good luck!

Can't help with the insurance, as I am female and very old, with a full bike licence for over a dozen years ... so a reduction in premiums is fairly standard.

Just be aware that putting it in a rented garage will then raise the "not kept at insured address" flag. You can't win. Wink

Really... So how many Chelsea tractors can fit in the back of a van then?

I'd suggest your usage would be notably different from the OPs, plus you've loads of experience.... filtering etc

Get a couple years no claims bonus. You just passed your test. A Ninja 300 with zero no claims bonus/just passed my test and they were asking 3k of me so I didn't get it back then. I pay £600 this year, and upon my next renewal, quotes show £200. So just wait a bit and prices come down.

Just for shits and giggles I got quotes for an R6 when I first passed my test. They wanted £9k. Now they're asking for just under £700 after 2 years of waiting which is far more reasonable.

I also live in London. What area you from? South/South East or straight up north/East = RIP insurance.

Also you can lie you have a garage and you can lie that you have a differnet job. But don't get caught going to work (somehow?), and don't get your bike stolen at home/wherever it's parked overnight if you want to lie about these things.
