So I intend to do my DAS in the next 2-3 months followed swiftly by the purchase of a new ride. The two bikes I have shortlisted are the XSR700 and the Ducati Scrambler (800).

I really like the retro look with the modern practicality and my thinking is influenced heavily by the Honda CB750Custom (sample attached) which in fact I have in another country but will never ride because its just too big and heavy for me at 5'7".

I intend to use the bike to commute into Central London 5 days a week, about a 24 mile round trip and use it for weekend fun and a second mode of transport as the other household vehicle is a family wagon.

Cost is of course always an issue and the Ducati is at least £1k-£1.5 more expensive.

Any thoughts welcomed.

Any thoughts welcomed.

The XSR is quite tall though light and not wide, you will need to try it.
If it wasn't for my other bike being a much taller trailie I'd have found it tall compared to previous road bikes.
It's a delightful sweet handling thing - can't really fault it.
Not the most suitable for fast A roads or motorway due to wind blast but again it depends what you are used to.
It's plenty fast enough to keep up with traffic there though.

the ducati will allways be worth more

whether the XSR will raise it's head above being a UJM or devalue like an ER6 who knows?

I'd prefer the XSR over the Ducati anyday.

If you're leaving it parked up in central london get some landmines to place around it whichever you go for, either of them will attract thieves like magpies to shiny things.

+1 for XSR - looks better, has better engine, lighter, it is cheaper and most impotantly is not Ducati, Yamaha is buletproof Laughing

Go for anniversary edition Thumbs Up

Scramblers are for men who carry Satchels.

I went out today to ride some bikes, tried a Ducati , the urban enduro model, an xsr700 and mt 07.

I bought the XSR.

Ducati was fine and I liked it, the MT and the xsr felt very much the same as far as handling and acceleration ( as you would expect) but in the end the Ducati didn't feel better than the xsr and was more expensive and I liked the xsr styling the most of the three.

So saying that, you really need to ride the bikes to decide. They felt pretty different to me.

I wouldn't recommend either as your first big bike.
I'd suggest you get a 'learner' big bike for the first 6months - 1 year and then when you've actually had experience on a big bike you can then decide what qualities are important to you, and then make the expensive decision.

But before that, do your DAS and then start looking at bikes.

IMO of course.

Wether you have your licence or not window shopping your fantasy next bike is a great pleasure. Of course once you get that ticket the shop window just gets bigger and fantasy bike garage just gets more fun given you can actually ride. Enjoy.

FWIW I would go for the XSR. Its just better value and spec wise a good match with positive revues as well. Will be easy to sell on as well.
