Considering a PC upgrade

Currently running an i7 2600k @ 4.5ghz stable however there's a minor problem with it. The ram I'm using somehow causes a double boot when starting up which I know is trivial but I've put up with this for 3 years now and I've had enough now.

I'm considering a 6700k however I don't know how much this will actually improve my system. I know the change in ddr3 to ddr4 is nigh unnoticeable and I fear the cpu change might be the same.

Oh and for some context, I play WoW which tends to struggle in raids I get around 30-40 fps on ultra with my GtX 1060. And I play CS:GO but my crappy laptop can run that fine.

I have an i7-4790K. Haven't checked cpubenchmark but I'm guessing the Skylake is more powerful (though 4 core vs. 6).

Utterly humongous overkill for anything. 2 Windows 7 VMs with vga passthrough for League of Legends LAN play on same machine - no problem. I'm guessing it could do 4 with enough monitors.

Run 16 VMs in parallel to muck around with linux distributions, basic.

It was a waste of money. Hopefully the motherboard and associated bits last long enough that in 5+ years it starts to struggle with the BBC homepage.

I'd get something lower end, save the money and spend it on booze, bikes, books. Whatever.
