Okay, after running around and being ticked off at the lack of information I'm getting in regards to getting my vandalised vehicles repaired (after nearly 2 months).. I'm basically saying "#£*@ it" and getting the rest of my kit and a bike. I want something on my terms! Ha! I also want to enjoy the summer while it's still here.
I've decided, in the end, to stick to the bike that I've already enjoyed: a Suzuki SV650. The price seems right, the quality reliable (to the best of my knowledge and research) and I figure it's a good first bike to hold me off until I've got the extra cash (and confidence) for something a little more fun..
There don't seem to be many available privately around this time of year, though, which is an absolute shame!
Here's your chance to agree/disagree/advise further than what I've already found online... and any last-minute 'first time bike buyer buying on own because I know no one else to help' advice is also appreciated
Cheers guys! |

Best thing you can do is to be "act now" ready in terms of having the money, gear, insurance quote etc all ready if an advert was to appear locally. Other than that just keep searching eBay, Gumtree, autotrader and whatever other sites daily, possibly multiple times a day, to see if anything comes up and hope for the best.
Couple of manuals to help you on your way;
https://www.zkmc.org/pdf/94553577-SV650-User-Manual.pdf
https://dpippin.com/dl/SV650%20Service%20Manual.pdf
Can find a manual for near enough any bike on google via "___ pdf" so if you don't get a SV at least you can use that to save yourself seventeen quid or whatever on a Haynes, no idea what the difference between those ones and Haynes are in truth but I've saved plenty in my time and they all look useful.
Can't really help with bike recommendation due to no experience with SV / similar bikes so would be talking out my rear end, best of luck with search. Oh, keep your options open for different bikes the first isn't the last and is more a learning tool as to what to look out for afterwards, think of it as a temporary commitment and with a big-er bike you could always P/X it after a year if its not for you. ____________________ The do it all, T̶h̶e̶ ̶b̶r̶o̶k̶e̶n̶ ̶o̶n̶e̶,̶ ̶T̶h̶e̶ ̶b̶i̶g̶ ̶l̶u̶m̶p̶,̶ ̶C̶h̶o̶n̶g̶ ̶N̶o̶o̶d̶l̶e̶ |

If you've no particular passion when it comes to a specific model, I would just fix a budget and pick a good number of bikes that are within a distance you're willing to travel. Look them up on the internet, get some insurance quotes ready and go and sling a leg over.
I was sure I was getting an 80's sports bike, then a 'retro' 90's bike, then an MT-03, then a Speed Triple, then an ST4, then an ST1050....
In the end I 'watched' five or six online, passed my test then went the same day. I happened to buy the first bike I looked at but I fell for the bike as soon as I saw it, and was lucky it was a good 'un.

Cheers NJD! Those will be brilliantly useful links...
nitrosurf & Cronik.. I've been looking for a couple of months at various ~600s because I had said I wouldn't get a bike before I sold my second car.. Seeing as it got vandalised the day it was being listed and I, therefore, wasn't able to sell it, I kept looking and started to narrow down what I wanted in terms of riding position, look and features..
I find it amusing it's come full circle back to the SV. I didn't want something too sporty (even though my love of Japanese sports bikes goes back to when I was 14), and I'm really not a fan of the Harley types (I'll leave those to the men in my family).
.. Although I have been admiring the new BMW scrambler from afar... it's way out of my budget!
On that note: am I missing a trick with insurance quotes? When I went to get my car it was based on the plates. How can I show up with various quotes and various bikes without it being plate-specific? |

Good choice
Are you going for the naked one or faired?
There is one here on 9000 miles only which looks very good. ____________________ Adrian Monk: Unless I'm wrong, which, you know, I'm not...

Thanks for the advice on insurance, guys - think I need to redo my quote anyhow.. But uh..
Cronik was completely right
I had my heart set on the SV650 but ended up buying a Ducati Monster 696... Surprisingly it was cheaper on insurance and I actually managed to find one - the SV650 was like that bus that never came... |

Confidently is the best way.
PC way: take pictures, get on PC, upload to https://imgur.com and (assuming they haven't changed their UI again when you read this) hover over the picture. You'll see a popup with a URL, "COPY" and a "V" arrow. Hover over the V arrow, click "Get share links", then click on the "Copy" next to the bottom left "BBCode (Forums)" URL, the one with [img] around it. Then just that into a post here, job done.
Phone/tablet way: no idea, ask a Yoof. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Geeze, I fail at being computer literate sometimes..
I've only got the one pic at the moment. Unfortunately chest infection has prevented me from getting back out on it since I bought it! |
