I've done a test run from the house I'm buying to where I work, commute going from 10 mins each way up to 50 mins each way.

Using 'in ear' headphones were alright but they didn't stay in well and the wind noise still gets through. After 2 hours at motorway speeds I felt incredibly tired due to the constant barrage of whistling

So. Are molds around a half decent set of earphones the best way forward to keep the wind out? Which goo/putty is best at a budget price?

Anything else others use that keeps the noise out?

Are you using bud type ones or the 'in ear' ones that are actually outside?

Maybe a new better fitting helmet might help?

Not helpful in this (hot) weather, but a Balaclava helps reduce noise.
I use this all the time when it`s not to hot.

Tried both. The bud type are worse than the in ear type. Think I'l go and get a decent set of the in ear ones(the ear plug shaped ones)

I have a limited budget to get rid of this wind noise. Cheaper the better..

Are the Fuze mold it yourself ones worth it?

New helmet isn't an option at the moment as my K5 is only 2 months old. Might try the scarf thingy over the headphones and see if it helps

What bike have you got? Thundercat? Maybe a taller screen might help a tad.

The bud type ones come with three sizes of rubber. Have you tried each size?

Soft, mouldable ear plugs/defenders that fit in the ear can be bought in bulk for not a lot. You roll them in your fingers until they're squished, then feed them into your ear. Hold them for a second or two and they expand to fill the gap; presto, you're now deaf. I don't use them any more because I love the noise of the ST4, but they work well. You can get non-disposable ones that you initially mould to your ear that you can use again and again, but they're more dolla obviously.

I just use eye plugs on my commute. It's a similar distance to yours.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262185481636 works just fine. My self made plugs + sealed earbuds are 4+ years old now and still going strong.

Well you can't find your bike keys, therefore no speed = no wind noise

Ear plugs moulded ones + a helmet skirt NOT the neoprene ones.

Helmet skirts do cause fogging though.

I've got a neoprene one and it's crap. It does the job of stopping wind noise but the first time you move your head to check a junction or lifesaver it comes off. Short of gaffa taping it on and looking stupid I don't know what to do with it.

What other helmet skirt options are there? If any?

***Hearing Safety Nazi***

Be careful you don't cukf up your hearing by countering wind noise with volume.
The sound pressure will do more damage than the boredom will. Smile

A helmet with a neck cuff/collar is the only thing that works.
Most of the wind noise gets in past the gap between your jaw and your skull. You could get a tightly rolled up Mirror up in there with most helmets. It probably amplifies the sound too.

Noise Cancelling is defeated by too much noise of the sort the wizardry cannot cope with. They are designed to deal with repetitive thumping/vibration like engine noise. Wind noise is weird.

They will calm a lot a large % of noise but when they flat spot the effect is terrible. Especially that wee bit near the end bit of Bach's 4th for string quartet. Sad Very Happy

A head band over the ears could work as well without being quite so hot.
And you can pick your colour (Probably wise not to pick pink Laughing )

I use ACS custom plugs on my daily commute.

They're not cheap but neither is my hearing.

These

https://www.amazon.co.uk/20-pairs-3M-Classic-Earplugs/dp/B0079G4ZH2/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1472323897&sr=8-6&keywords=ear+plugs

I get them from work *cough cough*, but even before this job, they are cheap, disposable and work. I have regular hearing tests for my job, and I'm only a fraction worse than I was nearly 20 years ago.

Just did the same commute with in ear plugs using the largest rubbery bit it came with. They work well but one of my ears is evidently a weird shape because one never stays in.. Fair bit of the high end whistle was blocked.

The way back I put a neck scarfy thing on over ears and neck struggled to get the lid on without the headphone staying in properly. Scarfy thing did a decent amount to stop the wind which I think is the winner.

I've ordered the mold kit. I reckon 2 sets of them made, 1 with earphones and 1 without coupled with the neck tube is the best I'm going to do
