Contrary to popular opinion, it's BAD. The EU very seriously want to introduce a biometrics system to prevent anonymous use of the internet and "net neutrality" is the thin end of the wedge. ways would be found around it of course, but it would not be long before biometrics were integrated into phones and tablets, and in the longer term into laptops and possibly even PC's. Once that happens most people will accept it as the norm, so I really sincerely hope it doesn't get to that stage, but the EU is very keen in it and it's Barack Obama's last gift to them before he stands down from office. So yeah, I'm quite concerned by this development. |
I... what? Th... that's not even close to what net neutrality is. Like, I... what?
Net neutrality in a sentence is an internet service provider has to provide all internet traffic at the same speed, regardless of what website it's from. It means no corporation can pay an internet service provider to make their website transmit to users faster than their competitors.
Without Net Neutrality rulings, as an example the Daily Mail could pay Virgin Media in exchange for Virgin agreeing to deliberately make competing newspaper websites like the Telegraph, The Sun, etc load slower on their customer's connections. Or Netflix could pay BT money to make Amazon Prime videos load slower.
It works in the customer's favour too: without Net neutrality internet service providers would be free to offer a tiered internet arrangement. For example, they could say you pay a base price but connections to video and news sites are deliberately slowed down. If you want them to load at the same speed as your connection to other sites, they demand you buy the next tier up. ____________________ 2007 BMW R1200R: On road
