Got my full license on 5th August and a black 2008 Street Triple on the 6th as my first big bike; loved it from the moment I sat on one. Thought, might as well splash out on it as I intended to keep it till its death and had planned long trips already. Infact just did a wee Wales run over the bank holiday weekend, ~1000 miles altogether without skipping a beat. It got nicked yesterday (31 August) while it was parked in a motorcycle bay right in front of a busy pub (Leman Street Tavern) between 5pm and 7pm. Unfortunately haven't been able to find a camera pointing to that particular location although I'm working on getting police authorization for one camera that might have captured something.

Anyway, its probably stripped down for parts at this point and flown into the ether so just have to take it on the chin and start saving up for another. DON"T BE ME, and for the love of god, fill your bikes with GPS trackers so we atleast have some chance of catching these twitching roadkills.

Your first problem is leaving it without an almax or buying a newer model. It can be started with a fucking spoon.

Sorry to hear it. Beef up your security for the next one. London is and always will be the worst place to park in the south with zero security unless you ride a proper piece of shite. Your bike will be targeted as it's literally snap lock and ride away.

Sorry, bruv. What Paddy said though. Older Triple + London = gone in 60 6 seconds. Thought that was common knowledge. Sad

CCTV footage will show a pack of unidentifiable yoofs on stolen / fake plated scooters foot-pushing it away. I guess you could monetise it on YouTube.

Best of luck with the insurance claim.

any new bike around the city is at risk from the ped bois who come in from all over and push them away. seen many heading through the Rotherhithe and limehouse link. got to keep them locked up properly.

Would a disc lock be good enough for a one or two hour stop? If not what would? Riding in to London with a big arse chain seems a bit impractical.

Moin - really sorry to hear about your bike Sad

More practical than walking home without one though.

Agreed.

So is the general consensus to not go in without a big chain? Would a disc lock not be enough?

I'm just asking because I have quit my job and need to go in to Shoreditch drop off laptop and phone. Was thinking of riding my bike rather than getting the train.

Pretty much. Avoid the big smoke unless you have a multipack of bikes and can afford to just break out a fresh one every time one disappears.

Sensible answer: depends on area, time of day, choice of steed and, more than anything else, luck. It's a case of risk assessment innit.

I have often left the chain at the place of work and even chained around a post and locked up overnight.

Carrying chains is a pain though.

I think this is a good attitude for life in general, mind. Anything actually nice I have doesn't leave the house.

The first 200+ quid phone I dropped was the last. It's too stressful to worry about that sort of thing.

I do make best efforts to lock up the bike when out and about, but if it were worth a few grand, I'd be looking at my watch trying to minimize time in the shops....

I wouldn't worry about one trip, it's just that rolling the dice 365 days a year mounts up. Especially if you leave the bike in one place and people start to notice it.

Westminster started charging for bike parking a few years back, you'd have thought 10% of that money (or of the inspectors' time) could go towards policing. That'd involve them actually treating public funds sensibly, though.

I very rarely go into central London on the motorbike, but when I do, I have only come armed with an oxford alarmed u lock thing. I never leave the bike for any period of time though - I know it only takes a few minutes and it's gone, but so far so good.

I live in London, and I use a monitored tracker in the bike, a 19mm Almax chain with stronghold lock, a disc lock upfront and then the Honda HISS immobiliser and data tag. This so far seems to have deterred the thieving shits enough, and they have been VERY active in my area.

If I need to go somewhere that requires me to leave my mode of transport for any period of time - such as driving into work, going on the piss and then returning the next day to pick it up, I drive the car. I don't want to lug a 12 kg Almax chain and all my bike leathers around with me on a night out, so just take the easy option.

Having had my scooter stolen a couple of years back, I learned my lesson with weak chains and budget solutions. Sorry for your loss, and I hope the scum that stole it die in a slow and painful manner, but let this act as a lesson if nothing else!

this isn't a good idea now either as they have a habit of filling the lock full of glue

leaving you with no lock to use when you get to it

Factually, or apocryphally?

I mean, it smacks of preparation rather than opportunism.

The thieving scum appear to have a thing for Triumphs, as a mate has had no end of trouble parking a Daytona 675 in Farringdon. The final straw was when they gave up attacking the lock and stole the dash - I guess in the hope he'd leave it there overnight.. Shocked

With most bikes it's a case of take a lock, any lock. There are enough saps out there parking mint RSVRs and Panigales with no locks at all providing easy pickings.

With a Triumph I'd want 24hr security detail and Almax..
