In the next couple of days I think someone is coming to buy my bikes.

They are all in decent condition and are basically ready for an MOT. I don't really have time to spend on them so are being sold as projects.

The guy is looking to tidy them up a bit and sell them on again (I assume quickly) so to help him, would it be safe to sell the bikes without signing the logbooks and posting them away - which would help the guy get rid of them quickly and make it look like it has had 1 less owner.

Or, could this come back and bit me on the bum if anything went tits up?

I don't know the guy, he just added me on Facebook so would be easy-ish to track down if anything untowards ever came from it but would prefer to avoid any issues - so should I just demand that he fills in the new keeper bits for all of the bikes?

To avoid issues, you don't want the bikes staying in your name once you've sold them.

He's probably legit but if he's not then best of luck tracking someone down with a fake account or who happens to be a traveller.

yeah be fine giving him the logbook without signing it and keeping it in your name.

i mean hes not going to race through speed cameras, commit many traffic offences and steal petrol, hes a nice guy after all...

No, it isn't safe. I made that stupid mistake when selling my last bike, and let the buyer drive off with the bike and the V5. I was very, very lucky, as (eventually) he told me his details and I fed them into the DVLA computer, and I wasn't caught out with speeding fines, parking tickets, stolen petrol claims, etc. There are lots of things to remember when selling or buying a bike. This sort of mistake can cost you dear! Look at your V5 and be clear what they have to fill in and what you need to tear off, and who keeps what. Really important...

So you are asking on a public forum is it fine to help him commit a crime?

I mean the DLVA registered keeper declaration - false statutory declarations and other false statements without oath: s.5

Errrmm...let me think Rolling Eyes

You will be fine. Here something to help you:

Playing devil's advocate here, is the registered keeper actually responsible for speeding tickets? You'll just get the letter first.

Whenever I've bought a vehicle from a dealer the 'previous owner' on the V5 has always been whoever gave the car in as part ex (i.e. not the garage).

I sold a car once, sent off the V5c and the next owner drove in a bus lane. Got the ticket, ticked the box "I wasn't driving" with a photocopy of the sales receipt, done.

I wouldn't worry about it personally, but then I actually enjoy playing with legalese.

Obviously get a receipt and contact details.

I made this mistake once. It was on my name for a whole year after I sold it. Shocked

Thankfully I didn't receive any tickets or anything.

Then he can operate as a trader if he doesn't want another keeper added to the history.

The moment the bikes leave your possession, do the change of keeper online:

If he doesn't want to give you a name and address, then that's his problem. You can just make one up, it gets rid of your keeper liability either way.

It's a Tarp.

I was hounded for months by DVLA for a car I 'gave away' to someone who knew someone.

Fortunately, Arseface McArseface kept the old bit of the v5 where 'someone' had signed.
I still had to track the cnut down though and pass the address onto the Taffies.
That was more as favour than a requirement as the lazy cnut I gave the car to should have had the decency to register it. Pricks.

Fill in the v5 bit relevant to selling to a motor trader. You have to cover yourself
