Just had the renewal letter in from the Insurance company (Bennetts), and they're saying that the best quote they could find is £495. Last year, as a new rider with a fresh full licence, it was £312. A 58% increase for adding a years experience with no accidents, claims or convictions??

Has insurance gone up massively across the board, or are they taking the piss?

You really are new aren't you?

Your insurance is almost certain to go up every year, year after year if all you do is go with the renewal from your current provider.

Yes, they often do this expecting you to just renew. What I've taken to doing is when I get a shitty renewal get a better quote and tell them to cancel it. They always say something like "Lets see if I can beat it" and I flat out refuse and tell them if they wanted my business they would have given me their best price when they sent the renewal.

Bennetts / Saga are doing this to a lot of people this year. My quote was oddly similar to yours, last year it was £99. I phoned, spoke to them and they said it was the best they can do. I bitched at them on twitter. Went to meerkat place ended up with £120..

Bennetts / Saga got back to me on twitter, asked me to send details and they'd sort it. Told them I'd already gone elsewhere.

Underwriter is the same as last year, Bennetts just getting greedy.

they reckon motor insurance has gone up 12% this year.

That said, renewal quotes are always ridiculous

New with bikes, but 37 years with cars, and never had a renewal increase by anything like that much (never mind when changing from 0 to 1 year NCD).

Watch out for renewal fees too. Last couple of years I've stayed with the same company ... but rather than autorenew I've lapsed it and then taken out new insurance with them as it's the only way I can avoid paying the renewal fee. And no, they don't make me send them proof of no claims because it's "already on their system".

WTF?

Plus I like making extra work for them. Because InsuranceTards.

Never renew, gouging will ensue.

I always call the broker immediately on taking out a new policy and cancell the auto-renew clause.

Bennetts are the biggest fuckwit bellends I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with

my renewal was ok, so I left it to renew, on a saturday night

you're supposed to get a confirmation renewal email

after 3 days and no email I call them, they tell me I've called and asked them to not renew, I haven't, then they agree I haven't but can't tell if they've renewed me or not so I tell them to fuck off as they're oviously incompetent and I'm going elsewhere

Next day I get a confirmation of renewal from them, so now I'm running two insurance polices and have paid out twice

Thankfully the last person at bennetts that I spoke to has a brain, cancels and refunds me and apologises for their "IT" problems that weekend making a mess of things

Discount their ridiculous commission to win your business in year one, then rely on non existent brand loyalty to cream it back in year two.

The underwriting premium is probably much for much; the difference is Bennetts earnings and fees.

The renewal for my R1 was £149.

So I went on-line and with the same company got it down to £92.

Go figure Rolling Eyes

MCE don't auto-renew anymore, just send you a letter that says your insurance expires on x date. If you ring them up with a gocompare or whatever quote and theirs is the cheapest they'll tell you on the phone they can't beat their own quote and just tell you to go with the comparison quote instead.

Suits me fine, couple of clicks and that's insurance sorted for the year.

Yes, I know MCE are absolute shite but it's been a 'needs must' few years.

Clarification: it depends on who they placed the policy with. Some underwriters I'm absolutely certain they have the right to tacit renewal, others they may be contractually barred from doing so. Therefore don't assume anything in this regard.

Admiral have just pulled a new one with my car insurance. The "bite the pillow, it's renewal time" email doesn't even include a figure. I have to log in, find the right document (out of 4) and dig through it to find how dry they're going in (spoiler: pretty damn dry).

Needless to say, the Meerkat will be Compared.

Unlucky op unfortunately this is business as usual for the insurance game.

I called up Just motorcycle insurance after passing and they wanted to charge me over fifty quid to congratulate me/update the policy.

I reckon they charge around £10 per keystroke/mouseclick these days and that's probably why the fees go up at renewal.

Wasn't there just an across the board hike in premiums anyway?

Standard tactic that, life lesson - specify not to auto renew on everything.

I treat it as a game each time I have to renew the bike or car policy. Every year they try to bump the premium up without good reason, every time I end up doing lots of shopping around and either get them to match it or move company. They show me no loyalty so I'm not afraid to move company. I sacked off IAM Surety for my car this year after about five years because they wanted to jack up the premium by 20% and didn't want to budge until I told them to cancel it at which point they offered to match.

I like how massive amounts can be wiped off premiums the moment you say you got a better quote. It's ridiculous.

The bike wasn't too bad this year, I ended up renewing with Bikesure on better terms after getting a more favourable quote elsewhere which they were happy to beat and throw in protected NCD, not just match.

Do all the quotes every year. And look at cashback sites such as Quidco and TopCashback too, which can also be an extra little bonus.

Just picked up a new car for the wife, did an online quote this morning and it came in at just under 500, phoned them up while at the garage and it went up to over 600.did a quick compare and it was coming back at the same.when I did the original quote they asked what day I wanted it to start and seeing as I didn't know when we were getting the car put the 10th of September.so paid 60 quid deposit took car home and did another compare but saying it was starting tomorrow hey presto came back at under 500 so cancelled the policy and started a new one, lost 20 quid doing it that way but they are a rip-off

I know it is a really rudimentary and boring thing to consider, and I'm not excusing this stuff but you need to consider the purchasing power of your money may have dropped relative to the other factors.

QE means you get shafted however you label it and so on.
