This is a bit domestic and I don’t mean to turn BCF into mumsnet, but…

With 3 of us living here with bike gear and visiting son and friends on bikes, the leather and Kevlar situation is getting a bit chaotic. I was wondering how you guys store all your gear.

We initially tried a spare wardrobe, but went through 3 snapped rails before we gave up on that idea. At the moment I have 4 of these down the hall way which keeps everything kind of tidy except for helmets. (I don’t work for, or sell them.)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fronted-Rail-Towel-Stand-Caraselle/dp/B0018Q5GWW/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1473151854&sr=8-6&keywords=towel+rail

Just wondered what others have come up with?

I had a similar issue with storage of my leathers and my textile suit. We just bought a coat hook thing from ikea and mounted it to the wall. Two hooks are used for the suits and there's a shelf above for my helmets. Maybe have a look at some hooks with some good wall mounts?

IKEA Expidit (sp?) for my helmet.
The jackets go on a hanger.
Trousers shoved by the Expidit
Boots under the jacket.

Not sure if our walls (and DIY skills) will handle 6 sets of heavy gear.
Was thinking about one of those cube units for helmets though. At the moment they get tucked under the dining table, so they don’t get kicked or knocked off. (With visors shut or you find the kitten asleep in one!)
I keep looking at the ‘dead space’ above the stair well and dreaming of a ‘push a button and a large rack descends’ kind of thing.

A big heap in the porch. It's important to mix and aerate regularly to prevent composting.

Jacket & bike pants live over the door in the front room.
Lid lives in a sideboard cupboard
Gloves, when dry, live in the lid.

Garage, with the bike. Balaclava and gloves go in the lid, which goes on top of the tumble drier. Jacket hangs off the back of an old dining chair. Bish bosh.

I bought some 3M sticky hooks, which in all honestly I never thought would be up to holding bike gear. They're stuck on the end of a wardrobe and 4 of them will hold enough gear for two people without flinching.

When it's not too cold out I have a ladder stowed on brackets attached to the ceiling of my garage. Sturdy hangers hung over the rungs. When it is too cold I have cloak room style hangers screwed onto a board which is in turn screwed into the wall using rawl plugs; located in the space under the stairs where we hang all our coats. It's held nicely with a lot of weight hung from it.

Found one of these for £30 is good for keeping everything together and it can take a lot weight on the bar.

Just wondering if anyone has one of these ...?
And if so, does it have space for leathers/lids.
https://www.mk-containers.co.uk/images/bikestores-store2.jpg

Not that I'll be likely to get one. My liege put up four decent strong brass hooks screwed into a chunk of wood in the hallway by the back door, and it works perfectly well; we just distribute lids perched upon the back of various sofas or armchairs within operational distance of warm drafts from the heating, usually. The only thing that really gets regularly hung up on coat-hangers in this household is patches Rolling Eyes

I do have a hall-way cupboard that mainly has sturdy hangers for armoured gear - I went through a phase of buying (insert appropriate number between 2 and 5)XL jackets unseen on eBay, none of which actually fitted either of us very well - so the cupboard actually needs a clear-out so we can put our regularly used things in there. I may have to have an ebay yard-sale.

I'd much rather fill it with snug glittery lycra-infused glamware and real fur coats, anyway.

I once reinforced a weak interior of a wardrobe with a nice metal pole, after snapping a few wooden/weak metal poles. I also used some metal end pieces and a central metal hanger that bolted through from the shelf above. That done worked supremely.

Search for heavy duty wardrobe rail and pick some bits that you desire.

The middle support really is the key though, and like I said, I bolted it through from above with a plate I drilled. A couple of m6 bolts and job was a goodun.

Mine live in a large wooden ventilated wardrobe in the conservatory/front porch area along with walking boots, wellies, other outdoor jackets etc. Helmet lives on top of the wardrobe in its bag. If I come home wet, they get hung over a chair by the radiator to dry first

It would be a horrible place to keep them as they'd be damp for 9 months of the year.

In the pic it looks like the opening goes through into the house.
You stand at the back in your pants. as in wallace and gromit items are trust upon you as you gently progress to bike seat and emerge from the doorway like a sequence in Thunderbirds.

The reverse process may be more tricky if not messy - especially if you bought groceries Thinking

I presume the rider stays on the bike in that shed until they want to ride... there's no space to get off inside it..

if you've got £2k kicking around doing nothing then https://www.secure-a-bike.com/ani/info.pdf looks like a better idea Smile

The pic clearly shows that works. Which is weird considering we went through 3 wardrobe rails!

Yeah. I learned about that the hard way. Dry cleaner’s metal ones just end up completely fubar and plastic ones snapped.

That would be fab. Especially if it took cover, chain and disc lock off too. Very Happy

Cheers, all. Very Happy

If you store it in a garage it gets foosty (damp) unless the garage is very dry which is difficult in winter unless heated. (and ain't nobody got time for that.)
I have a big cupboard in one room, I put some 3" X 1" on each side then put a bit of coat rail/pole across with a bit of shelving on top for hats and Clalabavas and other accoutrementals.
I put an eye-thingy in the middle of the pole screwed up into the shelve to provide a bit of 'belt and braces'.
Its solid and there's about six bike jaikits and their troos hinging from the pole on wooden hangers. Plastic won't last.
It's the rubber in the clothes that weighs heavy.

General hygiene laws apply:
Don't 'put it away' it wet, let it dry in air and gentle heat.
Leather and bacteria get on well. So let gloves and boots dry out before putting away of they'll acquire a rinky-dink in no time.
