 Posted: 06:12 - 07 Sep 2016 Post subject: Garage Door Advice. |
 |
|
So I moved into my new home few weeks back, finally just getting settled and getting rid of most of the boxes in my garage. However............
The garage door is a roller shutter door, which in theory its pretty good as it allows me to park my car right up my drive without the need to reverse it if I want to open the garage door to get the bike out. However there doesn't appear to be any remote / IR sensor attached and it appears the only way of opening the door is from pushing a button from inside the garage (can be accessed via utility room in house).
At first I was scouring the house in search of a remote control as I've never seen/owned an electric garage door without one. Then I came to the conclusion, there isn't one at all! This poses an extreme inconvenience to me, as it means I have to leave my bike outside the house, enter the house, let the dogs out the back, go into utility room, enter garage, open door and then ride bike in (assuming its not been pikey'd in the 5 mins).
I've came up with 3 options, feel free to post other suggestions:
a) Get a new garage door fitted (cost thousands ££?)
b) Leave it alone and MTFU about the 5 mins inconvenience
c) Procure some sort of button pushing clicker device fixed to the button inside the garage and supplied with a remote
I'm leaning towards c) however I'm unsure if said technology exists as I don't imagine theres a large market for it. I found 1 example of it (MicroBot) however its in America and I don't fancy wasting $50 + shipping to find out its useless.

Looks like it only works with certain garage doors, mine is an old fashioned door from a company that is no longer in business. ____________________ Gone: RS125, CBR125, SV650, R6.

Saying that the house is only 15 years old aka the door being the same age. Can't be that old fashioned. ____________________ Gone: RS125, CBR125, SV650, R6.

Instead of a switch outside, could you get an electrician to wire in a keypad? So, switch indoors and waterproof keypad outside? ____________________ NSR125RR - ZXR750H1 - ZX9R E1 - GSF600S - GSF600SK3 - VFR400-NC30 - SV1000N - ST1100-R - CBR900RR-R - GSF1200SK5 - GSF600SK1 - VFR1200FA - GSXR1000K2 - ZZR1400 D8F

If it's a button inside then that'll be simple contact closure. It'd be trivial to put something together that you could trigger from outside.

I'd probably use an Arduino Yun myself, since it could be connected to your network via wifi. ____________________ Honda CBF125 ➝ NC700X

I appreciate all the suggestions but surely there's something simpler which can be done? Along the lines of the garage mate app plus a relay with BT? ____________________ Gone: RS125, CBR125, SV650, R6.

Bluetooth range will be pretty poor. There are a couple of bluetooth relays on ebay some have a free app. Prices are similar to, or more expensive than, pre built fob based. Using you phone might seem like a good idea, until it's pissing it down with rain and you have to dig it out, versus pushing a fob button attached to your keys.
You could also try this as an option:

I opened the tab, turned volume on high and minimised it, cause you know work.
Listened to the whole thing and thought, MAN THIS IS INGENIOUS. Watched it back and ____________________ Gone: RS125, CBR125, SV650, R6.
