I have a bike listed on a classified advert on the usual popular selling site and seem to be getting a rather higher than usual amount of interest from potential buyers within Europe, mainly Germany and Denmark. These buyers are genuine and not scammers like you would expect - I can fish them out easily enough! They know the deal with regards to payment in cash on collection or bank transfer etc and are still happy to come over to purchase from here.

Has the current exchange rate changed that much that European buyers are now scouting out bikes here in the UK as they are that much cheaper or are the prices within Europe generally higher than here anyway?

Also, are there any more precautions that a seller should take when selling to a buyer who is a resident of another country? I can see a issue with the VED here in that said buyer would be riding un-taxed to the ferry port - although I guess once sold this is not my problem. I am also aware that I will need to cancel my insurance policy to remove any liability before they ride off into the sunset....... or rain clouds!!

Europeans have always been buying bikes from over here when the exchange rate has been favourable. Typically they'll fire it in the back of a van and go and pick up the next one. Less hassle than UK buyers IME.

Untaxed/uninsured if they're riding it isn't your problem chances are they'll have thought of that if they are riding it home.

Isn't the pound still worth more than the euro (obviously not as high as before all us racists voted to leave the EU)? I wouldn't have thought with relatively high used prices there was much benefit, it wasn't that long ago people were saying the opposite (that it was worth buying a bike from Germany etc.)

Yes the Pound is still higher than the Euro, but it has dropped. One Euro is currently around 85p

I'm beginning to believe this may be more down the the actual bike that I am selling now, as from what I can see the prices over in Germany for example are circa £500 higher for a new bike than they are over here. This must in turn affect the used market somewhat.

They come to you with Euros, (or you can ask them to visit currency exchange & bring quids) they give you the money you asked for, you give them the bike..............goodbye!

It's great for when you want to sell. CBR6 number 1 was sold for £1200. (with blowing exhaust and damaged fairings) I paid £1400 for it in the first place. A chap from Poland looked at it came didn't even start it and put it in the back of his truck.

Not so much when you want to buy. Before 2005 £150 could buy you a falling to bits beater bike with 2 months MOT and 2 months tax on it. Some gems in my collection were:

An XJ600 that cost £80 had a month MOT and 2 tax on it.
A CB500 for £300.
An NTV650 for £600.

Today bikes of that vintage are selling for around £1000 (or there are a lot of dreamers).

Nope no extra precautions. Take their money and give them a bike. VED is none of the sellers concern. And yes cancel insurance just like you would in the UK.

The only difference is you'll fill out the permanent export slip on the V5.

That is another bit that confuses me. I'm not exporting the vehicle, the buyer is.

For clarification, if any issues were to arise, am I liable for any fines from our lovely friends at DVLC if I am to fill in the permanent export slip?
