I'm looking for a new set. I've been using a draper set but I'm not that impressed with them for anything thicker than a couple of millimeters. What's a good quality brand to look out for. I'm happy to pay for good quality.

Cheers[/code]

From personal, a good set of TIN coated will last very well. As soon as the coating wears out you will have to sharpen.
A large problem is down to the operator not drilling correctly, it can be difficult drilling by hand to maintain correct speed and force but add lubricant too and dont burn out your tips.

I recently acquired a pillar drill which makes drilling a lot more controlled. I use oil when drilling but just 3in one. Is it worth buying cutting fluid though?

I quite like Bosch bits for a reasonable price.

We also get some very high end drill bits at work that begin with a G, cannot for the life of me remember the brand name. They're visibly a better cut drill when compared to RS branded bits (which is what our technicians get as a standard box).

A bench grinder and a day spent practicing will work out better in the long run in any case - even the best drill bits need resharpening with use.

Very true, too much pressure and a dry hole as well as axial loading can lead to a snapped shaft.

Aldi were doing a set recently for about 4 quid. I've drilled a few bolts out with mine and they seem fine.

I get ones in a red tin box from the local steel stockholders.
They are very good. They also do a magazine of smaller sizes so they are effectively disposable.

I use left over antifreeze as a coolant/lubricant for drilling hot stuff like stainless.

Far superior then doing it by hand just far left flexible. Do as much as you can with that and don't overspeed or over pressure the lever.

My local steel stockholder was run by my idiot downstairs neighbour, though how he managed to inherit a successful business and end up living in a cooncil flat with a shitty old Volvo and an ancient caravan I don't know. I wish I could remember the brand we got when I worked as a turner and Millar years ago.

I quite their SDS bits, they take a good hammering. Still manage to melt the tips if I get overexcited.

I have a fancy tin box with a range of sizes, when one breaks / needs replacing I've been replacing them with Heller bits. German made, seem decent enough. Usually buy a pack of ten off ebay, one goes into the fancy tin box, the rest wait in a drawer.

A good centre punch is also worth having.

I have three centre punches they're invaluable. I've thought of getting one of those spring loaded ones, are they worth it or just a gadget for gadgets sake?

The favourite chav tool for breaking car windows. Rolling Eyes

I use spring loaded on non ferrous stuff. brass, copper etc. but find they don't give a deep enough pop on steel so revert to hammer and punch for that.

Don't cufk about and get yourself one of these Bad Girls

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Drill-Doctor-750X-Unit-3-Pin/dp/B000BKTA00/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473386957&sr=8-1&keywords=drill+doctor+750x

Or go for a less expensive version.

Bosch drill sets aren't bad but Colbalt last longer or Manganese if you want to go all 'Rolls Royce' on a hole.

And remember if you are drilling anything, Speed and Feed.

A good woman always want's it that way. Cool

Cobalt bits for the win Thumbs Up
Why you'd ever need 5 of one size is mystifying though, unless they are some kind of cheap knockoff. Proper cobalt bits are effing pricey but worth it for the abuse they take.

Cobalt bits will drill stainless steel, but they are more brittle than HSS. I tend to reserve them for stainless only and use HSS for everything else.

A can of spray on cutting fluid costs £3.80. It'll last quite a long time and will extend the life of the drill bits.

"I was running low on [cutting] oil so I tried drippings from pork sausage, on 303 and 304 stainless. Worked fine, but take care that your dog doesn't eat the chips. "

Oh, internets, never stop being you.

HSS will drill SS no problemo.

It's a matter of speed and feed. SS doesn't like much of both.

HSS bits are fcuked on the first few rotations when used by a whankir.

Being an engineer has taught me that the best drills are Guhring, Dormer and Hertel drills are as good as they get but that`s not to say that "cheaper" ones are bad although some are.
You can still fuck decent ones up if you are cack handed.
Correct sharpening makes all the difference and even a new drill can cut crap because it isn`t right.Correct speed and using a cutting fluid/spray are important factors.
