Hi Guys,

This is my first post, and I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to mechanics etc so please bear with me and forgive my ignorance! I've been searching around for the problem to this but can't seem to put my finger on the exact issue.

When I try to start my bike (electric start) it sounds like it's really trying to start, but it just doesn't 'catch.' The last 2 times I started it successfully, about 1.5 months ago, I had to bump start it, but I can't even do that now. I've replaced the spark plug and I've tried fully recharging the battery. One thing I've noticed is, when I used to turn the key from off to on, it would make a whirring, electronic noise as if something was warming up. But now, even after a full battery recharge (battery was replaced very recently) it doesn't make the noise.

Also, kick starting doesn't even sound like it's trying to start.

Any help anyone can give would be great!

Thanks

Josh

The whirring noise is the fuel pump priming. If it's not doing that anymore, it could be because the fuel pump isn't working, hence your problem.

It might not be the fuel pump itself, could be the connections, so worth checking those first

The whirring is the fuel pump making up a small amount of fuel which is drained off when the engine is switched off.

Make sure you set the bike up to start like the owner's handbook says.

No handbook
Key to ignition on.
Normally green neutral light comes on if in neutral.
Turn the engine over on starter till it starts.

If fitted with choke on a carburettor engine.
Choke to full on.
Ignition on.
Crack the throttle about 1/8 to 1/4 turn.
Crank engine till it starts.
If no start.
Choke off.
Open throttle to Mac.
Turn over on starter for a few seconds 5 is plenty. That helps to blow the excess fuel out.
Set choke to full on and crank as before.
If it starts let it run for a few seconds to stabilize but at the fast idle.
Ride off.
Remember to set choke to off when you feel the engine running smoothly.

I'm using a stupid feckin tablet to post who thought tablets and mobiles were a good idea for typing?

Thanks for your reply guys. I'll have a look on the interwebs about checking the fuel pump and connections.

Here's where my ignorance comes in - I don't think my bike has a choke. I have been trying to use the throttle slightly when starting too, but to no avail.

Cheers

Josh

No, don't think any of the fuel injected models (2007 onwards) have a choke

You shouldn't have to (and therefore shouldn't) touch the throttle on a fuel-injected vehicle.

First thing you'll want to do is to buy yourself a cheap multimeter rather than taking guesses about what's wrong. Second thing, check the voltage across the battery terminals, third is check the voltage between the battery +Ve terminal and some bare metal on the engine.

They also flash the yellow 'engine' light if something's not right. Count the long flashes and short flashes then Google it. 1 long and 9 short gives you 19 which is a battery/power to ecu issue if I remember right.

But, if the light comes on and no whirring, there's your problem

Most engines need some sort of enrichment to help start when cold to allow for the fuel 'lost' to cold surfaces where is condenses and becomes useless.
There may be a little excess fuel delivered on 1st/cold starts on smaller FI engines. A lot of engines continue to deliver excess fuel for all starts to ensure there is more fuel than less. It is more inclined to start a little rich than a little weak.
It is all automatic or controlled by an Engine Control Module ECM/ECU (Like a computer thing some folk folk call 'The Brain' Rolling Eyes far from it as it is more simply 'A Memory')

ANd you're supposed to be a Biker. Where is your multimeter? Very Happy

You should consider getting a multimeter BEFORE you go looking for fit wimin.

They hand out a dive computer when you do your PADI and diving isn't as risky as motorcycling. Shocked

Does the light stay on, or does it go out after a short time?

No kill on a 2011. Maybe it was aftermarket switchgear?
