Friend is looking at bringing his bike up from Wales to York at some point but doesn't have time to go down and back for it.

I suggested getting it transported, I once did it from Brighton to York and it cost me about a ton at the time.

Anyone used such a service and any recommendations?

Would be cheaper to ride it there, Transporters start at £100 and depend on mileage. 5 Hours roughly must cost at least double that and the rest.

Paying for CaNsA's fuel and ticket would be alot cheaper. I bet he would be annoyed if it's a CG125 though haha

Nah it's an SV650 (equally as boring some would say) but he's happy to go get it it's just if the van route turned out easier/not too expensive.

Not bad wouldn't be too uncomfortable

I was offered £100 For about 130 miles from a transport guy so yeah, i imagine it will cost a lot and then you have to worry about someone handling your bike

Think most would want him there for the loading anyway

Dad used to move a few bikes about and always insisted the owner was there to supervise loading and was happy with it before it went

Some where bikes that had been sold so it was previous owner who was there andnew owner at other end

He did move a Harley and bloke had to ride his other bike to end destination to make sure he was happy at end

Without trying to make this a spammy post, I bought my bike off ebay from somewhere near Lands End, I was looking for transport companies and eventually registered with uship..... OK it took a week for the bike to be delivered (on 23rd December), but for 500+ miles the delivery charge was £115.

Same when I bought Paul's ZXR570, that was delivered from over London way to Chepstow for about £90 (that included bridge toll too)... can't remember the name of the site I went through for that one though. The drivers are basically bidding to deliver your bike.... and none of them has run off with my bikes yet.

I love this idea that a man with a van works for £2 an hour.

Wales to York, round trip, what? 6 hours including loading, unloading and getting home.

300 miles, so £50 fuel plus wear and tear, call it £120 (40p per mile is the going rate without profit), plus 6 hours labour on top.

I had a muppet who wanted to pay me for a load of VW Shuttle interior panels, before he'd sorted a man and van out. He really thought it would only be about £50 for a 400 mile round trip, twat!

You aren't seeing the bigger picture though.... the guy that dropped my ninja off had 3 other bikes in the van.

They bid on deliveries that suit them..... for example if I needed to run from Glasgow to Bristol anyway and got to pick up something from Glasgow to drop in Carlisle then had something to pick up in Carlisle and drop it in Liverpool, but had to stop along the way to collect something from Manchester that was going to Telford, but there was also someone wanting something taken from Stafford to Birmingham..... it's a slight inconvenience to me, but for a journey I would be doing anyway I'm paying for my fuel, food, accommodation and some money on top.... and for what a tank of diesel (on top of the running costs that I would be paying for the van anyway)

I love driving, I've hired (OK had friends hire them cause I can't), vans and driven up and down the UK to help people out.... I'm looking forward to when I can get my own van to start doing this kind of shit

Have Sprinter, will travel Laughing . I also enjoy driving vans Laughing . Maybe it's a grumpy bus driver thing? It's nice to be
able to choose ones own route, I keep my van empty so it's available for whatever I need. I made a ghetto wooden
wheel chock out of some scrap timber and ply and fixed it to the floor to keep the weight off of the bulkhead when I
strap down the bike. Also wired in a load of extra lights in the back so I can see what I'm doing. Collected a scooter
from Salisbury just a few weeks ago. When I made my wheel chock thingy, I Also bought one of these

Totally worth every penny Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

And a few of these

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EASY-TIE-ENDURO-MOTOCROSS-RATCHET-STRAP-TIE-DOWN-LOOP-EXTENSIONS-/360927291606?hash=item5408f168d6:g:nUAAAOxy2E1SFJb1

Already had ramps as I need them to get my bike into my shed. Last van had a roofrack so had a big bag of
ratchet straps from then available to use. Roof rack for the sprinter is the next van buy, then I can store my ladders on
the van permanently.

I've had 3 or 4 bikes delivered via couriers so just throwing my oar in:

The websites where you post a job, and wait for people to make you offers are good, however you will find alot of fluctuation with price. ie. I had a bike delivered from somewhere in Surrey, to Hereford, and I was offered a price of 90 quid, and somebody else offered about 150, so it is worth biding your time for a decent offer if using these sites. Conversely, I did find that although expensive, the couriers were happy to collect/ deliver at very short notice. I think about 12 hours from offer to collection, I didn't use them though.

I have always ended up using eBay. I simply do an eBay search for 'motorcycle courier' and then sort the matches by 'nearest first'. There's normally about 4 or 5 contenders and I send them all a quick private message detailing the job. I have usually had about 2 responses within an hour, and always quite reasonably prices. For me, it has always made more sense to pay to have the bike delivered on a weekend, and then spend my day working overtime. As opposed to spending the day travelling to collect it, and not getting paid.

I've used a2b motorcycle movers twice in the past, and they were cheaper than getting the train there and riding it back.

They also brought 4 boxes of other bits with the last one for no additional charge.

And how much is your time worth?
