In the next couple of weeks (before the weather gets too cold), I've got a load of moisture resistant MDF to spray up for the furniture in my VW Campervan conversion.
I've never sprayed 2K paint before, but have a compressor, 2 gravity fed guns (1.8 and 1.5 nozzles) and a syphon fed gun (1.5 nozzle).
I have a regulator/water trap and an old 4 X 4M high ridge roof party tent to use as a booth.
I've bought the paint from Jawel, 1L High white gloss acrylic and 1L high black gloss arcylic, 5L of high build primer, 2L fast thinners, a litre of fast hardner, mixing cups and a 400ml bottle of "rocket" hardner accelerator. I've also got a Gerson mask which appears to be the only one with filters up to 2K paint.

Once I've got the wood sanded to a nice fine level around the edges, I want to start practicing.
A couple of questions if anyone know, please.
1. If I make up a mix of paint and go around spraying all the panels, by the time I get to the last, the first should have gone off (15-30 minutes), so I should be able to run around with a second coat of primer.
Do I need to clean the gun if I'm going to refit it with the same mix of paint if it's half an hour from the first, or do you just clean when finished for the day or changing colour/paint type?
2. How long should I leave the primer coats to cure before adding the coloured paint?
3. The mix for the coloured paint seems to be 2 paint to 1 hardner and 10-15% thinners, a couple of drops of rocket.
The primer doesn't seem to need thinners, does this sound right for high build?
4. It should be a fairly hard high gloss finish, but is there a lacquer I can apply over acrylic 2K paint? Is it worth it? ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

I still have this in my bookmarks https://www.mig-welding.co.uk/primer.htm
Don't know if it will be much help to you but it really helped me.
They say you should have an air supply for 2k paints as they are much nastier although I never used one.
I used 2k self etch, 2k high build, premixed paint and then 2k lacquer over the top with metal flakes mixed in when I did my mountain bike. I practised a little on an oil oil tank first, the practise looks a lot better than the proper job
The worst thing I found was that the high build wasn't mixed together well at all and I had a pure lumps shooting out which I left on.
I aimed to run out of paint / primer between coats, if I didn't then I used the leftovers to paint an old desk which looks great now. During the time between coats I would fill the gun up with thinner, spray a bit about and just leave it until the next coat. |
