BCF,
Do any of you have a large single room in Landahhhn that you want to rent to me for very little, and you have a garage and nice house mates?

Alternatively any other strategies for finding a house share in London without going through the personality interviews with hipsters in what is essentially a ghetto. I've been looking on spareroom.co.uk but at my price point (450ish pcm all in) everything seems to be bait for sleazy bastards to show you a vastly inferior room elsewhere.

At that price range? No chance.

Lots of rooms (that aren't rooms, honest boss) at the end of gardens in certain parts of that London. Have you tried
the local mosque? They'll know someone with a room that's not a room to rent (that's not to rent , honest boss) and
I'm sure they will happily take that 450 off of you each month.

I'd like a Ferrari that is in mint condition for £5k, but I guess I'm Sh*t out of luck! Wink

£450 pcm is cheap for a room in a houseshare here in Basingstoke, so I'd be surprised if you could find something decent in the smoke.

Yes, but sadly mine also has a jacuzzi and a mains connection to Fullers Brewery and you didn't mention you wanted those in your request. So you'll probably hate it.

Bit harsh, but seriously. You're going to have to up your budget.

For 450 quid if it's manageable at all you're not going to find it on the Internet.

I'd be calling around adverts in newsagents, knocking on doors, etc, or grr666's strategy.

Wouldn't bother at all anywhere near a tube or rail station.

That's ignoring the garage. There are people paying 450 for garages alone.

lol yeah it's a low price i know, but i don't see much difference between them and the ones advertised at 600pcm.

Rather than compromising on price, i was thinking more about going further out along a good route in - Slough, Watford, Hemel?

£450pcm?

srsly?

£810pcm gets you a single room with a bunk bed overlooking a sink.

Yeah i get it, but i guess i'm trying it on - don't ask don't get etc. I mean in all honesty, in spite of the net the information in this space is still pretty terrible - garages might be advertised out in the sticks for that price, but there's no way of validating what's paid.

So in retort to 'are people really this thick' - no because it's a heterogenous product with heterogenous consumers and imperfect information. The only people who do well to take advertised prices as given are those under time pressure/desperate need of the product.

If you're considering West London I would guess that living under Heathrow is your best bet.

I'd be looking at the SE. New Addington etc. This is purely based on me visiting there and discovering they have lower-end shops than Hull.

Also not sure why you think it's absolutely impossible at that price range. I saw one yesterday at 430pcm in Northolt* with a garage and loads of space, in retrospect i should've snapped it up - but i was miffed because it didn't look as good as one i'd seen on the net earlier from the same guy.

*yes maybe very different to your definition of London. I am thinking anywhere inside the M25!

I've haggled rental prices in the past. Managed to get maybe £25 a month off one place (800 down to 775). But that was about all the scope for haggling I found. You want them to want you in their flat. Maybe let the mohawk down for a day and cover up the tattoos of naked women.

Garages are few and far between in the big smoke. All I can say is aim away from the tube and, if possible, away from regional rail services too. The worse it is from a transport point of view the cheaper it'll be.

Although for £450, you'd be sharing that room with two burly Bulgarians.

If you can increase your budget by £100 then you can live in a tent in someones dining room.

https://www.timeout.com/london/blog/someone-is-renting-out-a-tent-in-a-london-living-room-for-550pcm-091115

It's fully furnished but the price doesn't include bills.

ffs, why would you want to live in london if thats the sort of prices that you have to pay,

surely there other other cities in the uk that are better.

my work mate rents a 2 bed flat in the middle of edinburgh for £350 a month

If you're OK with being a little further out (but still commuting distance by bike or train), I think it ought to be possible. Won't be pretty, but it should be possible.

See e.g. Cheshunt: https://www.spareroom.co.uk/flatshare/hertfordshire/cheshunt

I think you'll need to spend more to be closer. Either that, or rent a bed in a shared room Smile

Depends what you're doing.

I generally agree, but for some careers, the salary increase outweighs the difference in rent. I also suspect it's not terribly difficult to find a minimum wage job in London that'll pay for aforementioned house share.

You're fucked if you want to buy though.

mmm, i get decent wages in edinburgh,
doing the same job in london id get a bit more,
but only just enough to offset the rent price,
but it wouldnt off set how much extra it would cost to commute to work, or any of the other high priced things london has to "offer"

my 3 bed house with garage, 5 miles from edinburgh center, in the country side costs me £900 a month mortgage,

i can get to work in 10mins on the bike if i push it, 15 mins normally,

we even have a new fangled multi person transport that comes past once an hour Wink if i was that way inclined,

basically im glad im not in london,

For a house the equation is pretty different, yeah.

Most people I know who managed to buy flats in Central a few years back sold up and bought mansions up North.

This flat gets a farmhouse in Hull. Zone 1/2 homes are pretty much CEO level stuff nowadays Laughing

I have a shed you can kip in for that price.

You do get free bacon sandwiches, though (Bonny can attest to this).
And now that the dog has died, the back garden doesn't have a dog-poo assault course any more.

And (bonus!!!) ... you'd be able to hear us "doing it" cos the single bedroom looks out over the back garden where the shed is currently placed, and we always sleep with the window open.

But you'd prolly need to hack the jungle of weeds away from the door, and then move out all the mouldy bits of engine casing and rusty suitcases.

Thinking Thinking ... perhaps not

[citation needed]

30 seconds on rightmove suggests the entry point for 2-bed flats in central Edinburgh is at least double that. For clarity: house-sitting for a friend who's been seconded to Dubai doesn't count as renting.

The reason I live *near London is because that's where my job is. More importantly, that's where my next job is. Yes I'm sure I could get a palace in the East Midlands for what my house in the SE is worth, if I had a job there. But when I fell out of that job following another "restructure" what then? Relocation probably. Or McD's.
