Having spent my summer weekends enduring the discomfort of an aggressive sports bike I finally took the plunge and did my first track day.

But I was surprised to see such a variety of bikes - even in the fast groups. Our instructor demonstrated how he could take 15 seconds off my fastest lap time on his enduro bike!

Which left me thinking... why do I bother with sports bikes? There must be better options out there!?!?

So I began a list of my requirements:
Fast!!!!! (Although I now realise this has less to do with the bike than the rider)
Good power range - not a two-stroke and not under 600cc
Cheap (probably old)
Comfortable
Good visibility - I'm fed up of not being able to overtake because my chin is on the tank!
Good in zombie apocalypse
Capable of eating up the miles (at any pace)
Kick starter (chicks dig them)

My thoughts are beginning to steer towards a street tracker of some kind but what do you boys reckon?

Don't just tell me about your old bike you've ridden to work every day for years - you will come across as biased and boring if you can't give specific reasonings!

Thanks

Your requirements are too onerous. There is one bike that ticks every box in your list, but I doubt you'd be interested (I want one, I want the price to be kept low, and there are few left in the UK Laughing). The vintage synth market is a lot like bikes. Once people realised that the Casio CZ-101 was the bees' knees, it wasn't cheap any more..

They haven't invented a bike that runs on dust or puddles of rainwater yet, so you're right outta luck!

If you ignore the first two requirements in your list, then the rest of them can be answered with a C90.

Yeah. This. Apart from the kick starter, you appear to be looking for a car. Probably an E39 540i

I reckon any old 4-cylinder streetfighter'd sportbike would float your boat. 600+ capacity, high bars for comfort and upright riding position and attendant visibility, probably cheap:

No kickstarter but you can probably bodge one of these fake Harley electric kickstarters on the side Laughing

What sports bike are you riding? I'd consider a ZX9R. You could always stick a fake kickstarter on the side. Or bump start, for that proper manly look Wink.

I don't know why people persist with sports bikes either.

I absolutely heart my KTM - it's a lunatic but a practical lunatic. Not cheap, though.

If you like your sports bike but are uncomfortable why not try something a bit more 'sports tourer'? I don't mean a full on sports bike that's now being called a sports tourer just because it's old, but one that was designed to be such a thing. You get the sporty thing plus (subjectively I admit) a more comfortable riding position. It is possible to hustle any bike around a track quickly if your riding skills are heroic, but a sporty bike makes it a bit easier for those not endowed with Iron Man's reflexes.

Got me trying to remember a car with a kick-starter now....
I'm sure I've come accross one.. a propper production type one, too, but I'm damned if I can recall.

Other than the various 1950's early 60's 'villiers' two-stroke & I think 'tax beating', "light-cars" & three wheeler 'bubble cars'.
