I can't imagine it will change any behaviour in the slightest. We had a 'Car seat safety' checkpoint set up here a few
days ago, with a half dozen fuzz pulling the Audis and Quashquais over to check it they had booster seats and whatnot.
I would have checked the phones as well while I had them stopped there. It was in for the entire day. They probably raised
a whopping 500 quid in revenue.

TPTB can make as many laws as they want. If there are no traffic police to enforce them or they can't be bothered then it is pointless.

EDIT

UK has 2nd lowest police per capita yet 3rd highest recorded crime in Europe.

Mostly pointless, sure. I've seen a copvan stopped in a cycle box with a mobile clamped to the hypocritical scvm's face.

Some Farces do run a fun sting though where they drive around in unmarked cars calling the numbers on the side of work vans. If the driver answers, BAM, nicked. Entrapment thread.

They say the fine and number of points doubles, well it could as well tripple, as people won't care. The laws in CZE say, that the driver shall not manipulate or handle any telephone or other voice and recording devices (yes, fidling with your GoPro while driving is not cool). People just don't give a feck.

I once saw a woman in a SUV, that was holding a yogurt in her left hand and a spoon in her right hand, feeding her child on the front seat of the car. Shocked

It seems quite tricky to enforce, that said there is a certain element of self-policing here because the fine is quite big as is the points penalty.

If a person truly believes they will never get caught, then yes, death penalty won't be a deterrent.

It does also raise the issue into current affairs again, so focuses the mind again a little.

Better to have done it than not.

I was nearly taken out on an NSL road a couple of years ago when sat in stationary traffic and a LWB Merc van came squealing up my outside (tyre smoke and everything) into path of oncoming traffic.
He had the phone clamped by his hand to the steering wheel and was locked rigid, probably in a bit of shock.

My fault for sitting at back of queue of traffic of course.

I once answered the phone at 120mph whilst on the back wheel and (obviously) wearing no helmet. The only points I got were on the Richter scale when the earth shook because Batman told everyone how cool I was.

What they should do is divert some of the revenue ploughed into scameras and the like into paying for plod's to catch dipshits doing dumb balls stuff like talking on handsfree whilst updating Facebook and eating a panini. Phew, using no punctuation is hard work.

The council in Manchester do it. They have bus lane SMART cars with big periscopes on them so they can hide behind concealment. However since bus lanes are 7.30-10.30am and 4.30-7.30 during the day they are used as phone distraction cameras. Again using the periscope. They generally lurk at certain junctions because there is somewhere to park.

It's been going on for years:

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/7994449.stm

Manchester has 54 of them.

You regularly see the SMART car parked here:

https://goo.gl/maps/PSETMkHREzw

Also on the opposite side in the apartment block. The problem is they generate false positives. One of my old bosses was caught. The thing is my boss didn't understand the mobile part of mobile phone and always left it in the office. He was leaning his head on his arm on the door as he had an automatic.. hell I drive an automatic and sometimes do this. He couldn't prove he wasn't on his phone and got a penalty.

I'd hand out bans for texting, reading the news, whatever whilst driving. Totally bonkers. Far more dangerous than 60 in a 30 or whatever.

The 'undue distress' defences or whatever that allow people to use their jobs to escape a ban seem backwards, too.

If you drive a car for the lols as opposed to for work, a ban is less of a deterrent.

Ah! Bike related, I've just realised that the CU80 offence code also applies to "control of the vehicle". That covers wheelie good fun, or at a stretch, standing on the pegs or riding with one hand off the bars because 2 cool 4 school.

60 squid, but what fun!!!!

It's an offence to use one of those in the UK. I'd hate to think that I was breaking any laws while riding . Tut Tut

If this is going to be policed with the same vigour as the "Motorway/middlelanehogging/dawdlers/tailgaters" clampdown, that was announced a while ago, it's utterly pointless! Rolling Eyes

GMP seem to think what the officer did was a good thing "we’ll tell the officer in question to keep up the good work" whereas I'm of the opinion he should have issued an FPN - 3 points, £100 ...

A £100 "fine"? Eh?

It's an offence to smoke in a shared work vehicle, which hasn't stopped clouds of smoke billowing from both windows of white vans up and down this green and pleasant land.

UKIP donor Arron Banks is campaigning to have Parliament revoke two laws for every one that they pass. About bleedin' time too.
