When I was a kid a friend and I were exploring the Beacon Hill Battery/Fort in Harwich, Essex (Piccy already Thumbs Up):
https://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/sites/b/beacon_hill_fort/beacon_hill13.jpg

It's completely open (or at least it was back then), and a pretty dangerous for kids to play... anyhoo being a bit of a dweeb I wanted to show him the radar tower, allegedly one of the first from the early days of radar. Pic' time again:
https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/09/29/1412001111607_Image_galleryImage_AA1P54_jpg_Stock_Photo_Wo.JPG

We approached the radar tower and had a look inside, and that's when we saw it. It was a translucent figure in what looked like a trench coat, and its heart was a golden translucent colour with a bright outline. My ears started ringing, and the air felt like it was electrically charged.

My friend and I turned round, walked fairly quickly out of the fort, and a little way down the road I asked him, "Did you see that?" He quickly and snappily replied yes. We never really mentioned it again, except for years later when he asked me if I remembered it, and even then I didn't want to talk about it in any detail.

Whatever we saw (no we were not on drugs Smile), it was more powerful than we were, it was like walking into a room and being faced with a tiger. It wasn't really fear, just a sense of GTFO quickly. Most people I tell this story think I am mental or we saw something else.

Anyone else have a ghost story to tell?

I hope tae Christ you're not about to start a thread about supernatural. We may as well have a religion thread then.

The thread becomes whatever it becomes Angelic but I posted this as I watched a little bit of some ghost hunting thing which was so badly faked it was painful.

Religion and all the supernatural/paranormal stuff are actually fairly similar IMO, based on a little bit of truth but mainly used by people to make money (out of other more gullible people).

I was listening to a radio interview (quite possibly radio4) of a real life ghostbuster. Not one of these religious, I can speak to the spirits and send them away types... She was a scientist who investigated supernatural phenomena and found rational explanations for them. The most common of which is infrasound. Sound in the 15-20hz range can induce feelings of dread/fear/unease and can actually induce hallucinations.

My guess would be that a building like that could quite easily generate those sorts of frequencies given the right wind conditions or possibly even, being that close to the sea, the waves may be having some effect.

EDIT: Just noticed that you said your ears were ringing. It kinda fits with this explanation.

I don't believe in ghosts either, not in the give me a tenner and you can speak directly to Darren way. I do think some energy or something can be left behind.

I stayed at an old farm house over in Ireland which had a creepy vibe, woke up in the morning with deep scratch marks on my back, and there wasn't a cat sleeping in the room with me Smile

It would have to have the same effect on two different people though. I don't doubt a scientific explanation it would just have to be a good one.

Read around about infrasound and ghosts. Often it affects everyone in that place. You were both in the same place at the time, ergo you both suffered the same effect.

A couple of times when I was a teen, my friends and I would get weirded out by something, a strange noise in an abandoned building, a sense we were being watched (and the inexplicable quiet fap fap fap sound) whenever we ventured into the woods.

Each time though, pushed on by the false bravado that accompanies being in the company of other teenage lads, we would investigate. The building not having windows in created the whistling sound we could hear (confirmed when we returned on a day when the air was still and the place was actually very pleasant) and the sexual predator ghost behind the bush turned out to be small woodland creatures eating/digging/bonking that scarpered when we charged into the trees ready to attack.

EDIT:
This one is quite interesting... affected both him and the photographer at the same time

Reading those links it seems to be electrical equipment generating the frequencies: The infrasound was found to have come from a newly installed extractor fan

Also: He concluded it was infrasound caused by a large fan and duct system and soon got to work preparing tests in the laboratories.

I don't doubt that but on a site that was decommissioned in the 50's, what would be generating it, unless they have been receiving free electricity for 50 years Very Happy I don't fully buy the wind explanation.

Looks like there has been an 'investigation' at the radar tower (looks like the usual most haunted bollocks): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAVjjlQfzS8

Not necessarily... One was caused by traffic going overhead. Now forgive me if I'm wrong, but Beacon Hill Fort is on a point that sticks out into the sea. Waves have been attributed to infrasound before and given the unusual geography of the area, waves pounding from both sides could easily cause some freaky frequencies. Similarly, wind blowing through building can generate these low frequencies. Check here for a list of sources.

I'm not trying to discredit your story, but given the location and the symptoms, I'd lay money on it being something like infrasound.

Agreed... This sort of technology is incredibly fascinating. Went to the radar museum in Norfolk and the Submarine Telegraphy museum in Cornwall. Both very interesting places to visit. Haven't been to Harwich though, but my mum lives in essex so may have to have a gander when we go down there next.

Coming from a scientific background, I was naturally very skeptical to anything related to the paranormal.

Then I saw this, and considered myself converted.

Ghosts aren't real. However the brain is great at filling in gaps.

Have some science.

I'm not saying this is specifically what happened to you, but it's my catch-all explanation for most observations.

If it was in a trench coat it was probably a bloke exploring. Given that you were kids, it's easy to be overly alarmed and have the brain incorrectly fill in a million gaps all at once (watch the science video above). Specially as kids actually, when the fear response is much more easily triggered due to simple lack of life experience, including psychological experience such as fear, the unknown etc.

Nothing to discredit Smile I'm not a spiritualist or anything. Seems if it was caused by infrasounds it was a very vivid hallucination, where it seems (need to do more reading) to be odd sensations/seeing things out the corner of your eye type stuff.

It gets very busy there apparently, 6 people visited it in 2013 Smile

I might go if I ever make it back to Harwich, hopefully it won't trigger some repressed memories and cause me to freak out Razz

I do have a few doubts to the authenticity of the attraction. When I was there (getting interfered with by Jimmy Saviles future ghost) the building was a wreck, you can see in the pics there's graffiti inside so it isn't like it was sealed like a time capsule. I think some of that equipment might have been added. They ain't getting my quid for lies Folded arms

I'm an atheist and also a non-believer of the spiritual world, but one event still has me scratching my head 22 years on.
My friend's mum was on holiday (he lost his dad a couple of years before then)
Three of us were making use of the free house and were drinking tea, smoking (normal cigs) and playing SNES - it was in the small hours we heard a loud thud from the kitchen - knowing we were alone (and the household having no pets) - we all went to investigate - we found a very neat pyramid formed from instant coffee in the middle of the kitchen floor. After a moment of WTF, we all grabbed a knife from the kitchen drawers (lulz at the bravado) and ran around together checking the downstairs rooms, cupboards, doors and windows - once satisfied we were alone [and locked in], we crept upstairs and did the same - we found nothing. So we all came back downstairs, only to find the dining chairs upside-down on the dining table. I remember feeling a wave of giddiness and needing to get out of the house (the other two described feeling the same thing) - we drove away and waited until dawn before returning.
This is when we saw the remains of two of our sleeping bags shredded on the roof of the house.

To this day I can't explain what happened, if it was a prank it was the most f'king awesome setup ever, but no one has ever claimed credit for it.
When we found the sleeping bags we actually contacted the police because it felt a bit weirdly sinister - the police sent a man around who dusted for prints but drew a blank. (This also amazes me - I'm pretty sure that if I reported something nowadays I'd just get a crime number over the phone and never see someone actually turn up and do some forensics)

It's frustrating not knowing, I wish I could go back and just stay there to try and see what happened, instead of running away like a girl.

I can't believe the most compelling evidence of what's behind all of this is available for anyone to watch on YouTube.

You're going to click the link, and then you'll find out exactly what Mary loves.

not a true believer myself but the mrs mate can speak to spirits

I have written this on here before but here we go

the missus and her mate were sat in the front room talking and having a drink when her mate casually said

they "know you know"

mrs said "who knows what"

her mate replied they know you used to play with the mono-lens in the kitchen
now my wife had never told anyone about the lens that her and her brother used to play with in her grandparents kitchen so this shocked her a bit
then her mate said

"and you used to pinch strawberries from the garden with your brother"

again this was something she had never told her mate as her mate didn't know her grandparents or the fact that strawberries were the only things they grew

We had a caravan at Dovercourt many years ago when I was a kid. I spent lots of time sodding about in and on those buildings.
No ghosts though, but quite a few used rubbers and empty beer cans.
