My EXC 250 4T died on me last week (whilst up a bleeding mountain!), after a bit of inspection I tested the coil with a multimeter and it was dead. Anyway, new coil, spark plug cap and spark plug have been fitted. I get a spark, the plug is wet, but the bike wont start. Any ideas? Carb issue causing too much fuel so flooding the bike? My mechanical skills are limited and if possible I don't want to take the bike to my local garage as I've spent enough on this bike this year and when I take it there it's there for ages. I won't attempt dismantling the carb myself as the way my luck goes I'll catastrophically fuck something up!

Thought it was worth asking here first to see if I can avoid the garage! Very Happy

What colour is the spark and can you hear a little crack?
Can you see or smell fuel ?
Have you tried EASYSTART spray with air filter removed no choke and half throttle ?

The spark is light blue and you can hear it too. You can see the fuel on the plug. I haven't tried Easystart, will be popping to the hardware store this morning anyway so will pick some up.

The plug shouldn't be wet => flooded.

Dry the plug off with a lighter/blowtorch and try again. If it still won't start and comes out wet again, you've got overfuelling issues.

I'll try that tomorrow, couldn't do anything with the bike today. Might make sense too as I know the bike was running rich, but odd why it stopped without warning.

Could be the carb float saturated, corroded, out of adjustment etc, or dirt allowing the carb to flood.
If you're a bit clueless on carbs, watch some youtubes on basic lawnmower ones to get an idea of the basic functioning parts.

Bit of an update. It's the stator. Best price I can find new is £165, so if anyone knows of a better price or a used one with some kind of warranty then let me know Smile It's a '02 EXC 250 Racing.

The stator has nothing to do with running the engine. How have you come to that conclusion?

Are you sure? I ask because they are known for going through them, which might lead to an assumption by a garage.

Have you got quotes for getting the stator re-wound?
It could be cheaper than a replacement if, in fact, the stator is Fubar!

loved your local video's!!

i dont know this bike at all, but you say you have ht and a wet plug.

does the carb etc flood??

how is it with a new clean dry gapped plug??

any hint of firing at all??

checked ht with plug in with a red neon plug cap?? cheap easy and visual check for ht in the real world.

can you post a picture of the genny and rotor.

so fuel in correct amount, ht, but still will not run?

i presume the engine can "breath"?

Is the genny rote flywheel key sheared, would be a relatively early check for me, as its possible and cheap/easy to check.

you have a stobe so can check firing point/ign timing, yes.

actually test rule that one out, as you have ht, but it may be happening at the wrong time. It does happen.

what was the nature of the death??

up in the hills, so some fuel used, fuel problem??

but rule in or rule out the ign timing and strenght of ht, the red neon loight "growing brighter" with increased engine speed.

yes i know the engine wont run, but it can be made to turn, even faster by pushing in gear, or going down all our steep welsh hills eh.

As sure as can be. It's had the new parts mentioned above and the other parts have been swapped with known working parts from another bike. The garage I'm using I trust them, they've always been quite good with me. Fingers crossed Very Happy

Suntan Sid, that's what's happening Cool It's been sent off to be re-wound, comes with a warranty aswell apparently.

Edit: Spark I got must have been the stator on its last legs ? Thinking

Cheers dude! This is the moment it died, as you can see, had plenty of hill to push it down to try and bump it!

without giving the game away, uni, radio mast and windfarm make any sense?

that's a big lake over there!

2t engine? so no cam chain to break.

just poodling along and dies, no spluttering or misbehaving, just dies instantly, you sure you didnt move the kill switch!! it does happen!!

seems electrical, so check flywheel key, or timing marks at least, "fire" mark on flywheel close to tdc or way off??

post a pic of the genny/flywheel/rotor etc..
syniad dda? gog. fel ni
