I needed some bolts quickly. The only ones I could get hold of in correct size and head were A4 Stainless Steel M5. I know the are not intended for load bearing applications, but my maths appear to say they will be fine.

8 bolts are used, and has a maximum load of 100kg.

They are not marked regarding whether they are m5-50/70/80. So I am being safe and assuming they are A4-50.

Which means they have a tensile strength of 500MPa and a 0.2% Proof of 210MPa. I found that the stress area is 14.2mm2, so then the max force at yield is 2982N which is around 300KG ish.

This seems high for a stainless m5 bolt, but my maths seem correct. So I guess, the question is, am I correct?

What direction are they loaded in? In tension thin bits of steel can be surprisingly strong, even though they will easily bend if subjected to side loads.

I reckon they will probs be okay. I weigh about 100kg and can imagine that the 8 bolts could probably take my weight on a dead hang.

What gets damaged/dies if bolts fail?

Hi

In a carefully loaded straight tension load I suspect a single M5 would take my weight, but putting on a bending force or sudden load would be very different.

8No M5 a4's are way more than capable of hanging 100kg, but make sure you only torque them to about 4 foot pounds.

The loading is dynamic, so the exact distribution is near impossible to guess without significant testing.

However, the maximum load that they will ever see would be 100kg. If one bolt is capable of sustaining this, then 8 is laughing.

They are in tension, with a bit of shear, but not too much.

What gets damaged? me Very Happy

The shear strength of A4-50 (I do still think they're A4-70 but without markings I'm not guessing at it being better than the worse), is 145N mm^2 so has a shear capacity of 2059N so around 210KG. I don't see any single bolt being loaded anywhere close to this level.
