its been a while since I have had a suicidal pedestrian or cyclist on my london commute. well no i have them every day but usually i manage to spot them before a collision.

so the usual scenario this morning, filter up to the cycle box and sit myself in the centre as all the cyclists go beyond box and sit just before yellow box or go through the red lights. ok lights go green so off i go down the middle, cyclist from left doesn't even bother to look or signal but simply crosses in front of the bike with his headphones on. managed to brake and keep myself upright whilst he bounces off the front/left side of the bike onto floor. have to say the guy was extremely apologetic which was nice as usually it is never their fault, just gave my usual "what are F you doing gesture" and told him to be more careful and off i went onto work.

just another random day in london i guess, possibly poor obs by me a bit maybe as tbh i usually expect them to do this but was in a rush this morning but oh well

He'd clearly forgotten to attach his Go-Pro...

The first time I found myself in Hackney was a bit of a shock.

I tend to give cyclists a lot of room on the bike now.

The impression is that cyclists tend to think of a motorbike as being a bit like a bicycle that's faster. But it's not really because you're wearing a helmet, it weighs 100-200kg, you're actually bound by such things as red lights, etc.

Cyclists have far more peripheral vision and ability to drop the bike or pick it up and run, I feel more comfortable with crazy filtering on a bicycle.

I mean, basically, the roads would be far safer if everyone had to pass in a HGV and a car and a bike and a motorbike, but that's not realistic.

If I don't get a suicidal pedestrian or cyclist in the morning, I'm surprised. Now I think about it, I don't get many in the evening...

Had one of them lean on me the other day. Not sure what happened but he ended up with his head of my shoulder sort of 'snuggling' at the lights. He seemed to be apologising and then we all went on our merry way.

That's London for you.

Meh, the problem in this thread is the cyclist having headphones on.

Having far more peripheral vision is all well and good but if you're deaf to everything going on around you then you're asking for trouble.

The bit I don't understand is why the cyclist decided to wearing headphones. Why would someone do that to themselves, how did they manage to overlook the fact they'll be unable to hear whats going on around them?

Ban headphones and ban vloggers. Dance!

Don't a lot of people recommend earplugs to avoid tinnitus though?
Or is that only for motorway riding?

So that's how Londoners court each other these days. Thumbs Up

Most of them wear them, I have speakers inside my lid and I listen to the radio but it's not loud and I can hear what's going on around me.

As a motorbike commuter in London it amazes me how unaware most cyclists are of other road users and I'm surprised a lot more don't get killed.

I've never found wearing headphones a problem but then I actually have some level of understanding of how other vehicles on the road work.

I don't think headphones cause you to overtake and cut in front of or ride 10cm to the side of motorbikes whilst lights are changing. More misunderstanding of how much control a bike has and how fucked you are if a small gust of wind or tiny imbalance or road obstacle throws them off course.

But meh, as usual, it's people thinking it's Really Really Important to get to work at 8.58am and not 9.05am because the world will collapse and they couldn't have just had one less slice of toast before departure.

Absolutely true!

I quite often have a fairly short journey by bus and if the bus drivers drove normally, they'd be dozens of cyclists under the wheels.

The bus drivers drive like they expect the cyclist to have no idea what they're doing, which is I think what saves them

I was shouted at by a cyclist this morning for sitting in the cycle box or something, as he proceeded to ride straight through a red light across a busy crossroads. Made me laugh.

I don't think it's ever recommended for cyclists to wear earplugs. Wink

I think ALL cyclists should be made accountable - with , say , a high viz jacket with a number on .. then we will see.....

So, how you gonna make a 15 year old accountable when legally they can't be?

Following your logic, no-one will be riding a motorbike bacause they can't learn to cycle becuase it's almost impossible to get the insurance because they can't ride.

When i used to ride around london on my daily commute, I would NEVER wear headphones. You really do need to hear whats going on around you... Simple to hear the speeding tosser coming up behind you :p

As for ear plugs, you can get limiting plugs... Things that just cut things down by half, you can still hear but its a bit quieter

I am all for Darwinian selection Razz

One of the greatest satisfaction of riding a not-too-quiet bike is that I can pull the clutch and rev up the engine to scare off the pedestrians who try to cross the street when it's turning red for them. Mind you, I might trade my BMW F800R for a Harley just for this! Twisted Evil

I know one should not generalise, there are idiots in every category etc, but cyclists are definitely the ones who have caused me way more pain during my years of commuting in London. Cyclists and pedestrians near Victoria - don't know why but they seem the most aggressive. Once a guy I had just honked at for crossing the street when it was red for him actually stopped in the middle of the street and started shouting: "what are you going to do, kill me? I was speechless.

A couple of months ago, while I was stationary at a roundabout, a cyclist hit me from behind. WTF? Broad daylight, excellent visibility, I was wearing hi-viz, and the bike has an ugly but functional and uber-visible top box with red inserts.

When I turn left and I know there are cyclists behind me, I have learnt to always wave left with my hand because for some mysterious reasons cyclists ignore motorists signalling.

Oh, my favourite are the cyclists who get all holier-than-thou and tell me off for using those bus lanes... which I actually can use because there is a big motorbike icon in the blue sign of the bus lane! Laughing

Jokes aside, the lack of education and training for cyclists is a big issue. Ever wonder why the stickers say: "cyclists stay back" and not "motorcyclists stay back"? It's not because we are a clever bunch - in fact, just browsing through this forum would give you quite the opposite impression Laughing

What really gets on my nerves is that the cycle lobby is over-represented politically, and with the excuse of cycle = green London has come up with quite a few dysfunctional schemes, like the cycle superhighways, which are emptier in the winter and almost totally empty at night, yet the roads have been narrowed for everyone else - in some cases (Oval to Pimlico in London) entire bus lanes have been removed! Or the 20mph speed limits popping up everywhere, without a shred of evidence presented as to how they'd be any safer; don't most accidents happen either at junctions at low speeds, or at insanely high speeds?
