I'm buggering about with my PS1, I have a cartridge which lets me connect it to a PC via Parallel. I have an old winxp PC with a parallel port I'm using for this.

I got it working but it wouldn't open again after closing it for the first time it just freezes on the opening splash screen. I tried everything and couldn't get it working. In the end I rebuilt the PC and tried again and the software worked I connected the the PSX and everything was great. I closed the software and restarted it a few minutes later and again the same problem. Nothing had changed I re-downloaded the software and it didn't work. restarted it all sorts to get it going but it won't.

I run the program in command prompt so as far as I know it doesn't install anything. I can't see what changes to break it. The program works fine in DOSBOX however it doesn't have the necessary connectivity to connect to the PSX.

I do not wish to have to rebuilt my PC every time I want to use the software. Any ideas?

I don't know the cause or solution to your problem, but emulation seems like a perfectly viable way of circumventing it entirely.

Yeah, I've tried it totally disconnected. It worked disconnected before but after connecting once it freezes.

As I said I tried dosbox however it lacks the parallel port functionality. It needs to be a proper parallel port a usb one is no good.

I think by emulation he means a PlayStation emulator. They've come on leaps and bounds and the best ones are very reliable. I've briefly relived the past with SNES, PS1/2 and SEGA emulators. The amount of configuration available on some of them is impressive.

There's sites with every rom imaginable as well, so you can even find things like Japanese domestic market stuff if it floats your boat. Obviously you must own an official original copy of any rom you download. Y'know, because law.

Sounds like when you first run it, it is changing a setting or something on your PC.

Might be something deep down if it is going through the parallel port.

As has been said, emulators are decent if you wanna play some PS1 games.

Try re-installing, then exporting the registry. Then comparing the export of the registry with the current registry. Also check environment variables etc. I doubt the dos program (if it is truly a native DOS program) Is actually modifying the windows registry, but it's obviously doing *something*. Also check if you have a config.sys and autoexec.bat anywhere on your machine. Unlikely but it's another thing that DOS programs used to get environment information.

I'm pretty good at getting old stuff to run on modern gear, it's really my IT mileu, but I'm surprised this even works. Command prompt is a poor substitute for a full DOS operating system. I'm also surprised that DOSbox does not have a parallel port functionality.

I found this that may be useful:

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

It doesn't install it is just an .exe that runs. All the DOS box stuff about using parallel ports is specifically about printers you actually have to set the device up as a printer in windows.

I've tried to install Freedos but it is being a shit.

installed dos 7.1 and win 95 last night, in DOS I could get the program working but not the connection. Win95 bombed out, presumably because my machine has too much ram.

I'm going to try win98 tonight.
