And so it begins...

Officially being made redundant. Not even 30 yet and already considering a complete change in career.

I have plenty of transferable skills but I cant decide what the hell to do with my life.

Anyone got any tales of success they fancy sharing to inspire me?

Thanks

Um. No.

Drivers of decision will be around quality of life versus monetary income. Since you've provided neither, hard to ascertain whether swapping from one career to another would be good, bad or just plain improbable from a financial perspective.

Sorry to hear your woes though. Hope you get something sorted.

30 is a good age to change careers if you can suffer the initial income-drop. You're only 14 years into a 49 year working life.

Consider your strengths and weaknesses with objectivity and you might be surprised at where your future path lays.

Every redundancy or company collapse has resulted in my ending up in a better job. This won't be your last - embrace it.

I got made redundant in March this year, aged 32.
As a father of two kids, mortgage, bills etc. etc. I had to find another job immediately. My pay out wasn't much. I'd only been there 3.5 years.
I would have loved to throw my money at learning something vocational. Something hands-on. But I had no time and nowhere near enough money.
Redundancy sucks. But it can work in your favour. Your answer for the dreaded "Reason for leaving" question in interviews is perfect. You can either find another job and chuck your money at something fun, or live off it and do something you wanted to do - depending on how much that is.
Personally, I had two jobs lined up, accepted the better sounding of the two (and am doing really well in a whole new industry) and spooged the money on a DAS course and getting some of the house done up.

This, I'm 31 and have been "made" redundant 3 times, each time winding up in an all round better jerb.
I'm too complacent to move on otherwise, I'm actually praying for my current employer to go that route. Praying

Have been made redundant 7 times over the years, last time wed am email from owners shutting us down, fri pm interview, fri evening job offer, sat am accepted by email, 2 hrs later sent cv into them, started next working day! ( at 60 yrs old) - so there is hope out there, .
But every time have been made redundant main objective was to get some money coming in for kids/mortgage etc. - didn't have an opportunity to try something different- after a few times is water off a ducks back. Everybodies situation is different

I've only ever been made redundant indirectly (I generally leave when it's looking obvious), but I agree with this. It helps to not spend all of the money, which is apparently sometimes difficult. Consider selling all the shit you thought you needed but don't actually need more than the rent.

I've always found this a bit of a non-issue. Could just be luck. A lot of people go on about it, but I've just gone straight in for a variant on 'wanted to improve my left wrist skills for a year'. Interviews are a game for the employer, make them a game for you.

I dunno. I generally think by organising your life around the principle of avoiding work (e.g. saving, learning to live with less, being very willing to turn down offers), you paradoxically end up in better situations anyway.

It's easier to take time to retrain or move or whatever if you can mentally deal with treating it as an investment rather than 'oh shit there's 1 month in the bank jobs.tesco.com'.

This is the story of why Derivative rides a clapped out CBF. If I had to take a min wage job I'd live in the car. #miserlife. No need to worry, the gene line ends here. Laughing

Had a major change of career at 33, resigned, travelled for 6 months, went back to college.

I used my brain though, didn't need an internet forum of strangers to tell me what to do.

Do what job you really fancy doing. Sit down and work out the numbers.

It pleases me to read this. As i'm 4 months into a career that I could continue to pursue until retirement. But I have no intentions to spend years and years doing the same shit day in day out, being excited for my 25 days holiday a year, living for the weekend bullshit.

I'm 25 and I am 100% dead set on doing a years working holiday in Australia and then travel west until I hit the UK again. Upon return I could apply for jobs in the same field (Engineering) but it could be a no go due to not being a competitive candidate having had so much time away.
So the thought of going to college/uni again at 30ish is somewhat warming to hear from someone else!
