Favourite roads between Birmingham & London?

tl;dr name roads that you KNOW are good/fun/twisty between Birmingham & London pls, thanks.

Gonna ride new bike home from Birmingham to London next Saturday, just got back from the dealership today after hours of motorways which were very boring.

Not taking motorways or dual carriageways at all next sat because new bike & breaking it in etc, but haven't got a route planned, that's why I want suggestions.

I'll be planning as interesting a route back as possible, want it to take like 4 hours tops because I leave Birmingham at around 2:30.

I could google what roads are good but that takes effort and could be a lie.

Anyway, road names I can include on the way home pls if you know any at all.

I used to do this loads.

TL;DR : A40>A44>A3400>A34

Out of London through to Bucks A40 (come off at the denham roundabout before it turns into the M40). Through gerrards cross, beaconsfield, High Wycombe, up to Stokenchurch, nothing up to here is particularly pretty.

Once through Stokenhurch it gets better, keeping to the A40 you go down a twisty hill which is good. Then through a few villages, watch your speed there. Through Milton Common and then follow the A40 around Oxford (not at all pretty, some dual carriageway, but the alternative route will take ages).

At the Wolvercote roundabout go for the A44 towards Woodstock. There's some more dual carriageway but honestly it gets nice from here. Once through Woodstock nice hoon along the A44, but don't take the turning into Chipping Norton at the lights, carry on to the A3400 towards Stratford upon avon. It is pretty scenic at first glance*, some of the villages are pretty appealing to stop off at. Basically if it's quiet you should have an awesome run on the A3400 all the way to Stratford Upon Avon. Get through there and it will take you all the way up to the M42 and the junction with Shirley / the A34 into town.


I used to really enjoy it, but i don't have a legit reason to go back that way. The alternatives are basically break off at Chipping Norton and take the Evesham / Redditch approach. Or A5>A45 through Daventry, Towcester and around Coventry. But i tended to get lost easily on that second route, and it's particularly ugly.

I'm with stinkwheel, just warm it up. Ride how you would normally ride, oil change at home. Personally I'd be on the motorway constantly pulling hard in 3rd gear. Cruising at 70 and then giving it some beans to a ton, engine braking to 70... Repeat the whole way home with violent bursts from 40mph to 80

Tbf I do feel tempted to just blast it down the motorway because R6, but got mates riding up with me so we all want to go the fun way home.

I did notice the accents start changing when I was up in a mcdonalds near brum on the way home yesterday. Odd stuff that is.

Also just to clarify it's not exactly Birmingham, it's Tamworth just north of Birmingham. Still Birmingham whatever. My number plate starts with BK which is nice. Bike init. I need some tea this morning.

Tbh if it's Tamworth your starting at, I'd probably cut across above Warwick etc and ride out the A5 past Silverstone and all the way to Milton Keynes. From there fuck knows as I want to get no closer to the smoke than that, but I expect you could ride down through Luton that way?

Is it central London your destination, just out of interest? The only reason I ask is I expect the last bit if so will take twice as long as Tamworth to Milton Keynes maybe?

Out of brum Id go A45 it's the quickest road out most often, and I'd go through Warwick and pick up the Banbury Road that follows the M40 towards Bicester.
