Talking to your bike

Does anyone talk to their bike/s? They already get personified (she/her etc), so it's the next (admittedly batsh*t) step I guess. Just curious to see if it's wide spread. Or not. Ahem.

Am I unusual in that my bike is an 'it' rather than he or she? Or is it just that it's barely worthy of the name motorbike and if I had something with a bit more oomph I'd be calling it Daphne and fucking it up the exhaust pipe every night?

Also I never talk to it. Or the car, which is also an it, and doesn't have a name, much to the wife's disgust.

My car has a nick name that came from its previous owner who documented it's re-build from an empty shell on an owners forum. I still call it that name.

My 125 I don't call anything except fucking brilliant and Im pretty nuts about it being as it's probably one of less than five white early 1986 full power examples left running in the UK?

One day it will hopefully be on the top ten list of the best KMX 125's in the country I hope. And it'll have a few bespoke parts that no other KMX 125 has been fitted with as far as I know.

I don't name my best mountain bike, but it sits in the living room next to my sofa facing the TV. So I'd like to think it's seen some pretty decent films too!

I'm quite attached to mine. The Duc gets a lot of time and affection. The 125's are loved. But it must be a tough life, as they looked like they've been raped by a gypsy scrap merchant...

They all get talked to though...

I've thanked mine on more than one occasion when against the odds it's kept rubber side down.

I've also been known to apologise to it for riding in the rain.

Yep. Bike has been named ‘Bug’ and she gets a pat and a thank you after every ride.
Perhaps more worryingly though, is for some reason I talk out loud when I ride.

I was riding my CRF250 on the A23 on Sunday, at 60mph, inside lane, and got overtaken, and then a split second later undertaken by two sports bikes both in the inside lane.

The whole personification thing is something I've always done since I was a kid. I don't name vehicles any more, but when my folks bought a Mars red '88 VW Polo brand new I have a very clear memory of naming it Sam and truely believing he was alive. I still get that vibe from bikes/cars now, but these days they're all girls; she/girl/babe etc.

I thought maybe I'm a bit psychotic, but maybe that's just humanity...

At most I've "wtf"ed at it when it hit a false neutral, or "fucking bastard"ed at it when I couldn't achieve something mechanically with it, like a stuck bolt.

It also doesn't have a gender, or a name.

She-who-is-occasionally-consulted talks to my bikes more. But yes every bike has had a name, although the bandit is more often referred to as fat bitch or fat-arse.

The Varadero's number plate began PX so was Pixie

The ZZR got named Purdey after it's re-build by a friend of the wife pronouncing Pretty in a weird way

The car is called Libby as the number plate starts LB but rarely gets called by name, neither does the bike tbh.

the pushbikes get called by name. The ZZR is the only one I really talk to, occasionally pat her on the tank and say 'good girl' after a decent commute. Occasionally tell her to stop being a fucking bitch when she's missbehaving.

My bike is called Zelda. The number plate has a Z in it. The car is called Sunny. Dunno why, my daughter named it.
I do swear at both. But I also give them a "Well done. You did good today." after a particularly long and/or arduous journey.
